Insights into Teddy Roosevelt Park and ND Badlands wanted
My husband and I are driving there in early Oct. and have no exact schedule. Probably 4-5 days combined at these two locations.
Where did you stay? Sections of the park you liked and why? Hiking you'd suggest. Canoeing? Nature highlights? Other areas to visit in the general area? Any hints you can share would be appreciated. |
The main attraction of TRNP is its isolation and solitude. The "painted rocks" beauty of Badlands NP is more extensive and more varied than that of TRNP, and the wildlife of Yellowstone is likewise. But a place that gets about a mere half a million total visitors each year is going to seem a lot more spread out than either of the former. So don't go to see the BEST natural beauty, go to experience some of the QUIETEST.
These two URLs will answer all your questions www.theodore.roosevelt.national-park.com www.nps.gov/thro/planyourvisit/things2do.htm In particular, note the words in the "Canoe Info" in the former: "The canoeing opportunities on the Little Missouri River are quite seasonal, primarily limited to the months of April, May and June." |
Thanks PaulRabe. We are looking for some solitude.

When I toured the park I hooked up with a Lakota Sioux guide from the company Go Native America for a day. He did a wonderful job explaining the religious and cultural meaning of the land to his tribe. I could tell having the chance to do this and share his viewpoint with me was truly meaningful to him. I did some exploring and hiking on my own and loved it, but I will never forget how much I learned and how the park truly became special to me when I heard about through the voice of a Lakota Sioux. Just another idea to consider.

Just the sort of thing I was seeking Shandy!

Next time I'll have to try the canoe and a visit with the Lakota Sioux.
Hey, that rhymes. The badlands ARE Teddy Roosevelt National Park, which I learned after visiting, but did not know when I titled this post. My insights and report. http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...ark-in-may.cfm |
