nukesafe, thank you for the tips. The good news is that I won't be in the SAm Juan Islands over Labor Day weekend. I planned it so that I will be there early in the week and not over a weekend.

I did plan to go to Orcas Island, so not having a car may be an issue. Can I rent a car on the island for the day when I get there?

nukesafe, one other thing. We had seen something about a "Scenic Byway Explorer Bus" that is available both on Orcas and San Juan and takes visitors around the island. Do you know anything about the bus and if it is an alternative to having a car on the island?

I had heard about the service, but never taken it. We generally take our car when we want to go to Roche Harbor on San Juan, or to visit friends near Eastsound on Orcas. Here is the website: http://www.visitsanjuans.com/scenicbyway Looks like it hits most of the spots tourists like to go, and most of the routes run about once an hour. They only run through Labor Day, though.

Interesting about Lake Quinalt. It is on my to-do list.
