Inn at Harbor Steps - Seattle
 

Anybody have an opinion on this hotel? I am considering it for a September overnight.

My wife and I stayed there several nights last summer, bugswife. The pros for us were location and secured parking (at pretty low rates if I'm remembering right). No real cons, except that, since the Inn occupies only a few floors of a high-rise condo building, you don't get the usual trappings associated with most hotels. Any specific questions?

Yes, 2 reviewers loved it, and 2 thought it was pretty run down and not worth talking about. I am torn...

Run down? Gee, I don't remember it that way at all. In fact, I think they were refurbishing some of the facilities - exercise room and such - when we were there. Rooms were nice-sized and well - though not luxuriously - furnished. Think they have mini-fridges too. One thing that did surprise me though, was that rooms are all below the lobby level. I believe they all look out over Post Alley (a neat little street) from a floor or two above, but it was odd going "down" to your room.

What other places are you considering?

Haven't really thought about it that much. I am by myself for one night, so I just want safe and clean. I can't stand huge hotels, but they are the cheapest. Since I will probably spend only about 9 hours in the room, I don't want to spend $350 for a boutique hotel. So, the Sheraton has the best rate and best location, even though I cringe just thinking about it.

bugs, you might want to check out luxury link. I got the Hyatt Grand Elliot for $150 a night and it was very good.

I would stay at The Mayflower Park Hotel instead. It's a much better location imo and fairly priced. Check out their website, it's got a lot of character.

Inn at Harbor Steps is south of Pike Place Market, and near two 'adult' theaters. It's not unsafe but feels a bit sleezy. I prefer other parts of downtown, even just a couple blocks away makes a difference.

Hotel Max or Hotel Andra are two other older but recently refurbished hotels. Mayflower Park is the oldest continually open hotel in Seattle.

Like I said, we chose it for its location! :-&quot; ;-) Really though, bugswife, you won't find the typical boutique-hotel type experience at Harbor Steps either. Have you looked at the Alexis Hotel? It's just a few blocks from Harbor Steps, also south of Pike Place Market, but I doubt you'd feel uncomfortable in that area. Another fodorite, mms, has enjoyed stay(s) there.

Yes, we have stayed at the Alexis and had a great stay. We have also stayed at the Mayflower Park Hotel and loved it as well. Either one is good, but I would give the nod to MPH for a bit better location. Only a few blocks, so not a deal breaker though.

Isn't it a bit less expensive as well?

Suze--Actually, we paid more at MPH than the Alexis, but I think it just depends on time of year and availability. We had a great deal at the Alexis, but have a great deal lined up at MPH for this Thanksgiving.

Hi, bugswife. Lee and I spent a single night there two summers ago. The rooms are on very low floors and our room was not only very dark, but smelled rather musty. Otherwise the room was very nice. I loved their afternoon free &quot;tea&quot; -- more like a wine party with lots of food. And the breakfast was sensational. But on our return that same trip we stayed at the Andra -- which we got for the same price booking directly and registering with Kimpton. We FAR preferred the Andra.

We've also stayed at the Alexis -- quite a while back -- and had a TINY room and thought the staff was very aloof. We asked about renting a car for a day and they tried to insist that they provide a driver -- at a huge price. They just couldn't understand why we wouldn't do that. And we've stayed at the Inn at the Market which was wonderful but has gone way up in price.

I really prefer the Belltown location of the Andra to the Inn at Harbor Steps, also.

Patrick--I remember you mentioning the small room before. They must have quite a wide variety because ours was enormous, and we had 4 people in it. It would be interesting to see all of them and see what is the norm.
