info on holiday
 

hi,
i would be really grateful if anyone can give me some info on this holiday that we are thinking of booking. we [4 adults 2 children, 1 and 6] have seen a holiday package to las vegas [rodeway inn] for 4 days and days inn international drive for 10 days.can anyone tell me anything about these hotels. i know the rodeway inn is not situated on the strip, but how far fromm the strip,walking distance? we would be flying with united airlines from u.k. would really appreciate some help here to decide to book or not thanks.

There is a site called cheapovegas.com that has a lot of information on the various hotels. If you do a search for Las Vegas on Fodor's, you'll get a number of posts about children in Las Vegas. My own opinion is that there are at least 10,000 better places to take your family in the USA.

For most people, especially those bringing children, 2 nights in Las Vegas is plenty. You might want to take the kids to California from there.

I'm not familiar with either of these hotels, but I would not assume that they are walking distance to the Strip. (a search on Mapquest.com could give you an exact distance). And with kids, I think you're going to want to be either on the Strip or VERY close (and keep in mind that the distance between casinos can seem deceptively close).

Contrary to what patq says, I think Las Vegas is a great city, for a family vacation or otherwise. Granted, there's probably more to do if you're child-free, but I think you'll enjoy it with kids too. I do agree that 3 days is plenty, although with kids you probably won't be partaking in the body-abusing activities that most of us without kids do!

Do you mean Days Inn International Drive, ORLANDO?!?

Please consult a map of the United States, first of all. Over 3200 kilometers separate Orlando from Las Vegas. You can't slip in questions about two hotels in two separate, completely different states.

The Rodeway Inn is about a kilometer east of the Strip, and is a barely adequate motel. I stayed there years ago after a friend and I got the insane idea at 7:30 PM in LA to drive to Vegas and hit the casinos. If you completely lower your standards to "better than refrigerator box under the Interstate", you'll love this place. If you want to have a pleasant stay in Vegas, look elsewhere.

The Days Inn International Drive-- I stayed there a few years ago during an overnight visit to a buddy in Orlando. The closest theme park (Universal) is well over a kilometer away. Disneyworld is over 10 km away. And it's not a particularly good motel either.

I think you're better off booking air and hotels separately. The package tours you're being shown are bottom-of-the-barrel, unfortunately, and you can do so much better with a little effort.

I would not book a hotel off the strip unless you absolutely must. The casinos and blocks on the strip are enormous and it makes a huge difference being on the strip. Try Priceline or even Circus Circus (since you have kids). I've been to Las Vegas many times and I don't know why people insist this is a "kid friendly" place. It's primarily gambling, drinking, eating, shopping, sightseeing and lots of walking. Not much fun for the young ones unless you really are willing to play in the pool, go on the rides and hang out in the arcades (IMO).

hipvirgochick: Good points, except that if given Circus Circus as a choice, I'll take a refrigerator box under the Interstate first. As I said in another thread, I'd look at New York New York, but I would not stay at Circus Circus under any circumstances.

rjw -- Point well taken :) I've actually never stayed at Circus Circus, just perused the place and noticed LOTS of kids.
