Inexpensive travel tips from Baltimore to Plymouth MA?
 

I want to visit Plymouth to do some research--I imagine it would take 2 to 3 days. I was hoping to do this for less than $500. Problem is, it looks like I would have to fly into Logan, and then figure out a way to get to Plymouth. When one adds up the hour drive to the airport, the need to get there 2 hours early, the flight, and the trip south, I've already lost almost a whole day. Amtrak isn't any better.

Ideally, I'd like to borrow a small plane and just fly into Plymouth Muncipal, but that doesn't look possible at the moment. :)

Does anyone have any ideas?

I would check BWI to Providence on Southwest since (according to Googlemaps), Plymouth is south of Boston. I really don't think you lose almost the whole day. The flight is only 1 hour and 10 minutes

Just checked flights BWI to Logan and both Jet Blue & SW have nonstop and flight times is 1.5 hr. You could get an early fight into Logan and take the Plymouth/Brockton bus to Plymouth.

You would then just need to get to your destination. You could also rent a car at Logan and drive to Plymouth, it's about 42 miles. Don't think you would lose a whole day either.

You would need to be at airport for your return flight about 2 hr. but could probably get there later than 2 hr window depending upon time of day your flight departs.

You didn't say when you plan to come to Boston. This is tourist season now for Boston and Plymouth so you would also need to book your hotel ASAP. Lots of lodging in Plymouth area.

Southwest flies to Providence, RI. When we visit friends who live near Plymouth, we always use the smaller, traveler friendly Providence airport.

One thing to do before you come (and maybe you've already done this) but make sure wherever you are going to do research knows you are coming, has available what you want to look at, and is open on the days of your trip.

With libraries strapped for money and space, it's not unusual to have limited hours and/or material stored offsite that has to be retrieved. That usually takes about 24 hours.

CW: oh believe me, I know. You also need to add to your list of snags that the institution only has one curator and if he or she goes on vacation the archives are closed. :) I am planning this trip in advance for a reason.

I thought of renting a car but that would be about $350 for three days and that will push my budget over the limit. I looked at the train but that is a 1.5 hour trip, and the train doesn't stop at Plymouth regularly. (At least I couldn't find that it does.)

E_M, Glad you've got the research covered. Didn't want you to get here and have those snags.

The bus to Plymouth will bring you to the center of town, I think. The train stops north of the city, so you'd have to have transport into the center. So the bus is more convenient and probably runs with more frequency.

You might want to check some of the discount sites for car rentals. They may be cheaper.

The closest Amtrak station to Plymouth is in Westwood (RTE) which is 31 miles from Plymouth. Amtrak fare to Westwood can be as little as $98 from Baltimore if you get on the train at 3:45AM. There are 2 car rental places within a half mile of the station and Enterprise will "pick you up" as the saying goes.

It's a 7 Hour Drive each way, so take your own car and leave early ...that way all you pay for is gas...

Amtrak is irrelevant, because commuter rail goes from South Station to North Plymouth.

But South Station is irrelevant because, to second Luv2travel, the P&B bus will pick you up at Logan and take you to Plymouth, cheaply and reliably.
