They simply must go to Gravelly Park. I'm not even a "plane nut" and it is terrific . . .

Sally, what dates are you going?
That is going to be the real determining factor in the rates you pay.
Weekdays are a killer!

What incredible input for this trip I am getting from well-traveled Fodorites! Thank you.

They are thinking about going on a Wednesday and returning on a Monday.

The air museum in Dulles info has been invaluable in trying to find the best way there so my father in law can get to it the most direct way.

I am checking out the Dupont Circle area for hotels as well now.

Now they are thinking about going either September or October.

Is one month better than the other?

The weather is better in October; summer heat sometimes lingers through mid-September.

I just went in Feb. Instead of picking the time, then the hotel- pick the hotel by time. There is an immense difference between weeks in D.C. There was over $200 a day difference in most hotel rooms between different weeks in Feb.

Look for a GOOD hotel in Oct. pricing and then Sept. pricing. There may be the same immense difference. Who knows!

I did everything and also did a long trip report. If you click on my name JJ5 and then scroll down to the trip report- you may see all the D.C. threads too- with much hotel information.

I would stay near the Archives if I went again with my grandsons.

Arlington) which is clean, quiet, shuttle to metro.

SallyJ, I put the long report to the top for you. "Best 22 Value etc." in the title.

For people on a budget, many like the Hotel Harrington. Please note, it is basic and a bit shabby at the edges, but it does have its fans.

Transportation is great downtown. To get to Udvar Hazy you will need a car if the shuttle from Air & Space has been discontinued. Plan on 45-60 minutes one way to Udvar Hazy depending on traffic.

By public transportation, it would be Metro orange line to West Falls Church, shuttle bus to Dulles airport and then a cab from Dulles to the museum. It would take too long to be viable--especially for your 88 year old father.
