Inexpensive hotel/b+b Boston
 

Hi,
I've got to go up to Broad St. (Financial District) for a seminar June 29 - July 1. I hope to find fairly inexp. digs (under 150.) if possible, and within walking distance to Broad St. restuarants etc.

My guess is that the financial district will be dead during the weekend, so if possible, I'd like something near the waterfront or the North End or anywhere else you'd rec.
BTW, it sounds like the 4th festivities will take place on the 4th can anyone confirm this?

Yes, the 4th festivities take place on the 4th.

How much is your company willing to pay? Boston is never cheap, and the financial district is no exception.

I don't know of b&b's in this part of the city (I lived on the waterfront for ten years) but residents aren't likely to, since they live there!

If this is a personal expense, I strongly recommend you use Priceline. You can often get the Parker House on weekends.

There are many, many restaurants within easy walking distance, Faneuil Hall through the North End, certainly.

My thought was that some hotels may reduce their rates during the weekend, particularly those in the financial district.

I've checked priceline and others and have found a few places that I'm not familiar with.

what hotels has priceline offered? The Marriontt Long Wharf is well-located, but I don't think their weekend rates will be great. The Millenium and Custum House are 2 others that seem to be in your desired location. You may wish to look at the Hyatt - a few blocks away but probably more business-oriented than tourist oriented.

The Millinium (sp.) was booked. I'll check the custom house.

The Bullfinch is coming up at 149. from but I can't figure out exactly where it's located or if it's close to Broad St. and Quincy Market, I may snag it if it's close.

Also the Doubletree on Washington is coming up at 139. but I can't get a fix on where it is - anyone know if it's close to the old Filene's? It's got some pretty mixed reviews.

Ok realize that downtown Boston is not all that big, so you can walk or take the T just about anywhere you want to go. I'd say go with the best price closest to where you want to be.

When I looked, Hotwire had some excellent rates. Often you can determine the hotel on Betterbidding.com and/or shopping the Hotwire packages (if you are familiar with the Hotwire areas).

Recommend you shop like the dickens and book forthwith as "Boston Harborfest" is going on June 28-July 4.

If I can figure out where some of the listed hotels are by using the lousy maps provided on the discount sites, I'll be golden.

p.s. Forgot to mention earlier that tripadvisor has a great list of hotels with average pricing, ratings and numerous links such as orbitz,hotwire, expedia, priceline etc. etc. - the best price comes up first.

Oh my - avoid the recommendation for Chandler hotel.

Although not gospel, The Chandler did receive decent ratings on trip advisor. The rates were 139. but the location was a bit further out than I wanted, as my time will be limited before and after the daily seminars.

I snoozed on the Bullfinch which started at 139. and ended up at 228. per night from the discounters and 199. by calling the hotel directly - go figure.

I also snoozed on the Millenium (great location- ok reviews) while I dragged my feet it booked up - moral, if the price is right, snag it.

I did book a room at Nine Zero - 206. per night, per room from Expedia which came in at the cheapest. The hotel is 4 star and seems to be in a sweet location on upper Tremont at the base of the Commons, Beacon St. a couple blocks from Faniel, semi close to the North end and Broad St.

I like that it's out of the Financial district, as that area seems to die on the weekends. I also like that the hotel seems to be more interesting than a typical business hotel. Not that I'm bringing my beast, but dogs stay free - sounds great as it's next to the Commons.

As for the downtown Doubletree, it got mixed and not so favorable reviews b/c it's very close to the Hospital and noisy. Although the price was ok - 139. it was further out than I'd like.

Here's a link to the tripadvisor hotel search that I used. I found it to be a very useful tool as it had comps. from all the biggy discounters - Expedia, Orbitz, Hotels.com etc. The hotels are rated by preferance, mapped (not so well, however) and you can check rates. Ignore the average price listed on trip advisor - there's some nice deals out there.

Of all the hotels you mentioned, Nine Zero is the best by far. Terrific location.

Good you skipped on the Millennium (at any price). Doubletree would have been okay for that rate.

Don't be concerned about the Financial District being "Dead" on nights or weekends. It is quite literally only a few blocks from the Faneuil Hall area, also not far from North End, Bulfinch Triangle, etc.--areas which are more lively at night. Boston is a very walkable city. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks Ralphie and djk, I spoke to the seminar director who has assured me (contrary to what I heard) that one can indeed get lunch etc. close by.

ralphie is right. the financial district blends very quickly into the waterfront, north end, beacon hill, chinatown, downtown crossing, theatre district, newly gentrified combat zone, etc. all of which are not dead on weekends. i always prefer to be in the middle of the action and i would not have a problem staying in the financial district if the price was right.

The Westin Waterfront is running a summer special, $159 per night until September6th.

Fantastic hotel and a great deal.
