Inexpensive family getaways
We've been to disney this year, and are already planning our trip back for next year. We would like to do something inexpensive this summer. Are there any cool little places that are off the beaten path that are good for an adventure? We live in NE Ohio, and have from Aug 14-21. HELP!! lol

Have you considered Ontario as a destination? Your dollar goes further here.
|
I have not. What all is there to do? I would have to get a passport for my little guy.

Drive east on US 6 through northern PA. Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon is outside Wellsboro.
Take I-99 north into New York State and visit the Corning Museum of Glass. Come back through I-86. See Lucille Ball's grave in Jamestown. You can do some hiking in Allegany State Park (New York) which is spelled differently from the Allegheny National Forest in PA. The town of Bradford PA (on US 219) has the only McDonald's with an active oil well. |
Come to Kentucky. We have mountains to river valleys, an excellent array of state parks, Mammoth Cave National Park, Corvette Museum, horse farms in the Bluegrass area around Lexington, pioneer forts, Shaker Village, in our biggest city, the Louisville Slugger Bat Museum, Derby Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, great restaurants. Google KentuckyTourism.com for good info.

Last I checked, under 16 travels with a birth certificate. No passport necessary.

The Kentucky ideas are good.
Have you done the Amish country in Ohio? |
Very familiar with Amish land, as my kids call it. To me its a day trip (we are in Columbus). Possibly an overnight. Lots of touristy tchokes to buy, the "authentic" stuff is expensive IMHO. Basic fried chicken buffets, can give you my opinion on some of the better food places.
Would you consider the Bourbon Tour of KY? Cant give links right now but you can Google. There is a new hotel in Louisville everyone is raving about. You could do Cedar Point and Kings Island in Ohio, if that is your interest. Stop in Columbus, lots of neat galleries in Short North, German Village, tons of unique restaurants, summer festivals. |
LBloom, if you mean Hotel 21C in Louisville, it's pretty expensive.
|
Carolyn, dont want to hijack thread but have you done Bourbon tour? We are considering that for a 3 day weekend in the Fall. Any experience?
|
|
No, we haven't done a bourbon tour. Not on our agenda.
|
Have you been to Kennywood outside Pttsbutgh or Knoebels amusement park, also in PA? We loved both, historic and really fun.
