indoor rain forest
I heard about a indoor rain forest, I think it was in Iowa....anyone got any info???

The National Aquarium at Baltimore has a wonderfully replicated rain forest on the top floor. Maybe there is one in Iowa, also, but this one is really great...it's also a world class Aquarium. Get more information about them at their web site: http://www.aqua.org/. I could not find much at the website about the forest per se, but lots of info about the aquarium. Trust me...the rain forest is there...I was so hot & it was so muggy in there...I can't describe it.
I visited one last year in Galveston, TX. It was fantastic - all sorts of birds, fish, butterflies, and other creatures lurking around, and yes, the humidity is something! Quite a learning experience - I envy the field trips that schools close by can offer their students...

Are you thinking of Brookfield Zoo in Chicago?? They have a tropical rain forest exhibit with animals and birds etc.
The city of Des Moines has thrown around the plans for an indoor educational rainforest, but it's met a lot of opposition and hasn't been built yet. The Botanical Center, though, is full of tropical plants and birds with a huge banana tree right in the center. It's a lot of fun.

Bill - The Cleveland MetroPark Zoo also has quite a nice Rainforest, which includes animals, birds, insects, butterflies, some snakes, and a very large, very old and mean looking crocodile. There's also an area that, on a timed schedule, 'showers' throughout the exhibit.

The Dallas World Aquarium has a wonderful indoor rain forest, complete with leopards and a crocodile! It's well worth a visit if ytou're in the area.

There is an indoor rainforest jungle at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. You can walk through the whole thing. There are waterfalls and monkeys. It was really fun.

Just a quick update to this old post: The rainforest will be built in Coralville, Iowa, to the tune of several million dollars. It will be a "destination" of sorts -- much development around the area. I think it's supposed to be tourist-ready by 2008...but I'm not certain. A

The rain forest in Coralville Iowa is not even a done deal yet. There is still lots of opposition. It will be interesting to see if it ever gets built, and what form it will take in the end.
