What is the 1 thing that I should see in Indianapolis? This coming Sunday morning? Not church. In a 3 hour visit because of my short span of attenti

I suggest you take a stroll around the canal and view the Memorial to Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. There is a map on the link above.

The Zoo and the Butterfly house are very nice.
The Speedway Museum.
The Museum of Art, and the surrounding sculpture gardens. Visit John Dillenger's grave in the nearby cemetary (forget the name, but its the really big one).
Stroll along the canal and visit the Eiteljorg (misspelled) gallery.
Schmooze the shoppes in Broad Ripple.

With nice weather (and that might happen, long range forecast of 62 high with only a 20% chance of rain) I'd walk the canal. From the Indiana State Museum on the southwest, past the Congressional Medal of Honors winners' memorial around the curve and north to the USS Indianapolis Memorial. It's a pretty walk with fountains, flower beds and art scattered about.
If the weather is bad you're pretty limited for a Sunday morning.
I believe the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum underneath Monument Circle opens at 10:00am on Sundays.
Another possibility is walking through the Indiana State Capitol. It has access 24/7 though at off times (like 11:00pm Christmas Eve) you might only be able to walk the main floor.
The zoo and gardens open at 9:00am on a Sunday. They are a short walk across the White River on the old Washington St. bridge.

Some of the suggestions you've received are very good. But I don't think people are taking into account your Sunday morning time frame. Make sure you check hours before settling on a particular place. For example the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art doesn't open until noon.

Thanks for the suggestion! The walk, the MOH memorial, and the USS Indianapolis Mem., is just what I was looking for.
So, they close the capitol at 11PM on Xmas Eve? I suppose that is to keep it clear for Santa Claus? Can't be, as it is a public building? or maybe the legislature passed a Santa clause?
That's a plan: I will go for a walk!

I was able to change my flight to return from Lexington, so I never made it to Indianapolis. My Derby experience was wonderful. Also enjoyed learning a bit about visiting Indianapolis from this thread.

To add, it's a safe place to walk alone in the daylight. At night I'd just take normal precautions - know where you're going and don't head down a street that doesn't have streetlights or other people milling about. The areas you'd want to avoid aren't places with hotels or with sights that a visitor typically would see, so you should be perfectly fine.
