In NYC May 28-31: Help w/ Outdoor cafes/Rooftop Cafe at Met/Best bargain shopping in Manhattan/Best time to walk the Brooklyn bridge?

3 friends and I will be in NYC May 28-31 and we would like to make it an unforgettable trip for the one person who will be there for the first time (the rest of us have been there several times). We will be staying in the Upper West Side. Any and all suggestions on great sidewalk cafes, the best collections at the Met (which of their restaurants is the rooftop restaurant?), where to go for great shopping bargains, etc. Also, please recommend one good restaurant in Chinatown and one in Little Italy.

Sonia: If you can manage all of the things on that list, your friend wil indeed have an unforgettable time. A few answers:

The upper west side is littered with outdoor cafes, especially on Broadway around Lincoln Center (65-68th Streets). Cafe des Artistes is probably the best of them.

As to the best collections at the Met (whch does NOT have a rooftop cafe), in no particular order, the Egyptian galleries (turn right inside the main entrance) may well be the best in the world; the newly re-installed Greek galleries (turn left) are just jaw-dropping beautiful; the Impressionist collection (second floor, top of the stairs and turn left) is the best and most comprehensive apart from the Musee d'Orsay, and the Englehart Court of the American Wing (main floor, northwest corner of the museum) is one of the most idyllic spots in any museum anywhere. (The above suggestions will take you past about 2% of the Met's collection).

Best time to walk the Brooklyn Bridge? In late May, just about any time, but my preference is late afternoon. At the other end of the bridge is the River Cafe, one of New York's best restaurants, which is on a barge out in the East River. There's outdoor dining there, with Manhattan as your backdrop (reserve well in advance).

Hope this helps.

While there is no true outdoor cafe at the Metropolitan Museum, on nice days they have a snack/coffee cart in the rooftop sculpture garden. It's a great spot to relax and look out over the park. After walking the Brooklyn Bridge, you could also walk around Brooklyn Heights. It's a very upscale, nice neighborhood with great views of Manhattan. Have a fun trip!

Bargain shopping in NYC...Try Century 21 - a downtown discount department store. They have lots of designers you would never see anywhere else, plus some good deals. Another good off-price store is Syms - a location downtown near Century 21 and one on Park Ave. in the 50's. Also, there's a TJ Maxx on 7th Ave. around 16th St. If you have time while you're on the Upper West Side, look for Nice Price - on Columbus in the upper 70's or low 80's. They have random stuff, but usually some cute, hip brands for really cheap. Also, if you can get up early for brunch on Sat. or Sun. (by 10:00) go to Popover's Cafe on Amsterdam at 87th. - not too pricey and very good food. Cafe des Artistes, as someone mentioned above, is a little pricey - just go down to the Village or SoHo and walk along until you see a menu that appeals to you. There are a million good places. Have a blast!!
