I have stayed at that Marriott, and we really loved it. Was one of the only hotels in the downtown core with a good sized pool and hot tub. And after climbing those hills all day checking out the sites, it came in very handy. You are right near the Museum of Modern Art, and it's easy to get to Union Square or to take mass transit. I wouldn't worry about the area.

Note that if this is a bigger convention, it can be hard to get a cab in the evening just in general. Have your hotel staff or restaurant call one before you pay.
