Impressions of Buellton

Hi, everyone. I live in L.A., and I'm looking for a small town that's within driving distance to get away to for a weekend. Something similar to a small New England town that has a lot wide open space (Shelburne, VT and Cape Elizabeth, ME come to mind). I've been thinking about Buellton, but was interested in getting impressions of the town before booking anything. Thanks for your help!

Hi Jeff,
I used to live very close to Buellton, and it was really not much more than a stop off the freeway. It is a bit bigger than it used to be, but there's still not a heck of a lot of charm there, IMHO. Los Olivos, Sant Ynez and even Los Alamos have more of the wide open spaces you may be looking for, and more charm. Although the Santa Ynez valley is scenic, its hard to compare to a small town in Maine or Vermont. But if you haven't been there, still worth a trip. Solvang could also be a good sightseeing base because there are plenty of nice places to stay that are a bit less expensive than Los Olivos...

how about Ojai? How about Julian, north of San Diego?

how about Idyllwild? What is it you want to do with "wide open space"? Your answer could help with suggestions.

Hi Jeff,

I live an hour north and IMHO Buellton and Solvang have no charm. I would try Cambria, Santa Yzez and Los Olivos. My first pick would be Cambria, more open space, more great restaurants, great places to stay and beautiful beach and hills to walk around. Ask if you want more details.

Lynette
