I'm concerned about the high surf advisory and potential rain!
 

My DH & I are leaving for Kauai this Saturday, May 28, and have been waiting for this for 4 years!

From previous trips, I know that scattered showers means that the showers will pass and that another part of the island will be sunny.
I've been checking accuweather and now I'm concerned about the high surf advisory in effect right now and the forecast for June 1 & 2 says mostly cloudy with downpours!
What is going on...May to September/October is supposed to be a drier time...so why the potential downpours? Why is Hawaii experiencing such a high surf right now?

Does anyone have any answers...anyone there right now...anyone just get back?
Is anyone that is going soon concerned? What is going on right now to cause such high surf and rains?

As someone who lives where we get a lot of rain, I know how you feel. It has been raining in Akron for 2 months--I kid you not--we had 4 days in April with no rain--and May has been just as bad.

You have no control over the weather--so stop stressing, get packed and look forward to spending some time in paradise. You will love Kauai. If it is raining up north, drive down to the south. Go where the sun is--we visited in February, had some rain but it will not ruin your trip. And don't listen to any of the posters who say "without the rain, you wouldn't have rainbows" As far as I am concerned they can have their rainbows--just give me sunny skies.

High surf comes and goes. It may mean there is a day or two when you need to be careful about going in the ocean, but you can still enjoy your experience without going in the water.

There does seem to be a lot of rain this year, probably due to the La Nina weather pattern in the Pacific (my guess). Chances are it will still be warm, and the rain will not happen all the time. Parts of Hawaii have had severe drought in the last few years, so for them, it is a blessing to have some rain.

Just go and enjoy paradise again.

The winter rains lasted several weeks beyond normal.

But it has been dry the past week.

The forecast is always for showers.

But most are during the night and early morning.

June 1 is a week away, so I wouldn't really be concerned about the weather that far away - it can change easily.

There is always high surf depending on which side of the island you are looking at. During the summer (on Oahu) the north shore is flat and the south shore has higher surf. It reverses in the winter. Also if there are high winds, that can kick up the surf forecast.

Here is a cool site that gives you an idea of predicted swells. When we went to the BI in early spring, it was green to yellow every day. We ended up having a few big days, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I was anticipating.

I never check the weather forecasts before a vacation! They are notoriously incorrect, and it really doesn't matter anyway. The times I've been caught in a downpour in Hawaii, it was still very warm temps, and they passed quickly. Most often in the evenings. I do pack a small travel umbrella and shoes that are OK if they get wet (like 'slippers' ie flip flops).
