Ignorant Aussie
Please excuse my ignorance but would someone mind explaining to me some of the things I read on this forum eg ttt, DH etc.
I would appreciate learning some other ones as well so that I can use them some time. Thanks! |
ttt--to the top, when you want to find a post or bring it to the top to get other's attention
DH--dear husband (variations: DS--dear son, DW--dear wife, etc.) I remember wondering what these acronyms meant. There must be somewhere to go to learn the shorthand but I don't think fodors has it on their faqs (frequently asked questions) |
I remember being confused about all the abbreviations when I first came here. Here is a pretty good list:
http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/ |
The 'D' can also stand for dumb, ditzy, dumb@ss or anything else starting with 'D'. You judge by the content of the post.
|
The first post I made on Fodors got a reply that said "BTW rooms are provided". I repled with "What are BTW rooms?" The reply to that was "OK, I'll bite and let you know that BTW means by the way".
|
IMO -- in my opinion
IMYO -- in my humble opinion LOL -- laugh out loud, lots of laughs ROFL -- rolling on floor laughing |
Others that crop up -
AFAIK - as far as I know; IIRC - if I recall correctly; OTOH - on the other hand; FWIW - for what it's worth; YMMV - your mileage may vary (old disclaimer about how fuel-efficient cars might not be so efficient once you buy one ;) ) - means "different strokes." |
Regarding the DH, DS, etc., it took me a long time to figure out the often used DIL, daughter in law.
Then there's DSOTGWUTWMC - dear sister of the guy who used to wash my car. |
TTT is used to mean "To the top" by people who assume the abbreviation has only one meaning. However, it may also mean:
TTT Tactics Team Trainer TTT Tank Tightness Testing TTT TAP Testing Toolkit TTT Tap to Tap (metallurgy) TTT Target Transmission Time TTT Teacher Talking Time TTT Team Time Trial TTT Tekken Tag Tournament (Namco video game) TTT Tele-Teaching and Training TTT Teleport to Target (gaming) TTT Terrible Terry Tate (Reebok character) TTT Thai Telephone and Telecommunications TTT That's The Ticket TTT That's the Truth TTT Things Take Time TTT Things That Think (MIT) TTT Third Tier Toilet TTT Thought That Too TTT Tic Tac Toe TTT Tilt Table Test TTT Time to Talk TTT Time to Target TTT Time to Train TTT Time Triggered Technology TTT Time, Talent and Treasures TTT To the Top (aka bounce, BBSs) TTT Tokyo Times Tower (Japan) TTT Total Time on Test TTT Touch Tone Terrorists TTT Train The Trainer TTT Training Task Table TTT Triangle Tennis Trust (India) TTT Tried & True Trains TTT Trinidad and Tobago Television TTT Trunk-to-Trunk Transfer TTT Truth Takes Time TTT Tummy Touching Table TTT Two-Tangent Theorem (geometry) |
happytrails: I assume that you provided that information to take it to the top!
|
No, I was trying to discourage the use of TTT because it confuses people, such as "Ignorant Aussie." In many instances, the following meanings of TTT may make just as much sense as To The Top:
TTT That's The Ticket TTT That's the Truth TTT Things Take Time TTT Thought That Too TTT Time to Talk Why not let TTT be OBM (Of Blessed Memory)? |
Because people here usually learn quickly that ttt means someone is being nice and helping your post stay alive.
Even if you spell it out, they still don't understand it at first, so might as will use ttt and they'll figure it out, or ask. I know I didn't get it right away! |
ttt
|
You can also type abcdefghijklmnop ... and it gets put to the top!
|
Good point Gail.
|
Thanks to you all!!! happytrailstoyou - you missed out Taitung - TTT is the 3 letter code for the airport BTW this is in Taiwan.
Thanks Maggi that list will be very helpful. I feel much better to know that others have started out like me. Myself and DH are travelling to your great country in 2 days time. I am so pleased that I found this great forum to help me plan our trip - people have been VERY helpful. Ignorant Aussie |
We sincerely hope you have a great time in the US and we'll look forward to reading about your adventures when you get back. Lots of luck with the driving too. Don't worry, we'll be asking for your advice, come time for our trip to Australia/Sydney!
