I love Atlantic City. It's not supposed to be Vegas. Vegas doesn't have a beach where you can sit at a beach bar, drink a margarita and watch the tide come in, while listening to a band. In the last five years it's almost like a different town.

It's been a long time since my last trip to AC, but I thought it was a slum with casinos.

On the good side, it does have a beach. Also I played Monopoly a lot as a kid, so I got a kick out of seeing the Boardwalk, Park Place, etc.

The only reason to even comtemplate visiting AC while visiting NYC is if there's a performer you adore who happens to be playing there.

SlotJunkie - you can do all of that in Vegas!

You can sit on a beach (artificial - sand trucked in), drink a margarita (in a container shaped like a football, if you like), and watch the tide come in (artificial - wave pool), while listening to a band.

You cannot really compare the two. I have lived in Las Vegas (taken many friends to all the casinos and have my own favorites--Bellagio,for one) and been to Atlantic City tons of times but they don't compare! Borgata reminds me of Bellagio-a tad bit--but There is no comparison. Vegas is HUGE compared to AC! It's like comparing apples to oranges!!

Atlantic city strikes me as more of a depressing place....even though it is on the ocean, it just has this sleazy depressing ambience about it.

In Vegas it is simply cheesy and plastic, much like Disney...and I think the description of "and adult Disneyworld" is dead on....super CLEAN....and enough things around you to constantly keep your mind off all the money you just lost.

So I guess as some people look at this as entertainment and therefore if you are going to gamble, then at least do it in an environment that at the end of the trip you can balance out the whole ball of wax as an interesting time for your expenditure of money.

Incidently, I'm surprised that you would not have included New Orleans.

Harrahs downtown is a HUGE casino, very pretty and BEST yet has tons of entertainment inside, food, and you can leave the casino and still have a whole city of wonderful things to explore and some of the finest dining in the US.

I'd say go to Vegas for serious gambling, and go to New Orleans for a vacation with gambling.

Depends why you are going. If you are in NYC and you're going for the day or weekend to gamble, then yes, it's worth going. It's not that long a ride - 2 hours tops. A lot less time than flying to NV. If you have a car, drive yourself. Then you won't be dependent on any bus schedule to leave.
