What?

We've stayed at Royal Sonesta in the past and loved it. While I'm hoping the rates will go down this summer, we may have to consider other options. What would you recommend? Obviously we want to be in the French Quarter and love the charm of a New Orleans hotel w/courtyards rather than a high rise chain lacking character.

Soniat House comes to mind. Also the Omni Royal Orleans is fab, but not heavy on the "courtyard" quotient. Many smaller hotels have courtyards but they aren't as luxurious as the Soniat or Omni.

We really liked the Chateau Hotel on Chartres. I wouldn't consider it luxurious. But it's a real NO courtyard hotel. It's in the French Quarter but far enough off of Bourbon to be quiet. We found it to be a very convenient location. We also liked the fact that they bring continental breakfast right to your door in the morning.

Across the street (on Chartres) from the Chateau is the Provincial, where we've stayed many times.

There are several courtyards, and some of the rooms open onto semi-private ones.

We've stayed at the Lafitte Guest House (Bourbon and St Phillip) twice and liked it alot. It is on the "less travelled" end of Bourbon. We have not stayed there in several years so others might be able to comment on it more recently.

Friends of ours just stayed at the Monteleone and loved it.

Hi Snowrooster,

We love the Dauphine Orleans on Dauphine Street (1 block over from Bourbon). Quaint courtyard feel, clean nice rooms. If you opt to upgrade from standard, the rooms in the Audubon house are beautiful with King size beds and whirlpool tubs. We've stayed here several times and never been disappointed. Great location, fair prices. www.dauphineorleans.com

Just seconding Byrd's suggestion of the Provincial. Don't get a room in Building 5 though.
