If you had only a weekend....
 

If you had only a weekend to get away in the fall or winter, what city would you visit within the U.S. and why?

New Orleans,no doubt. Fun,mild climate. Never seem to get bored there no matter what.

We only had a weekend this spring and we went to Philadelphia.
There was so much to see, do and eat!
It is easy to walk around in, the people were friendly and helpful, we had no complaints and will go back in the fall:)

I'd pick someplace I'd never been within a 2-3 hr travel time. Longer than that is too long for just a weekend.

I have never hesitated about going more than a few hours away on a weekend trip! I've done Tampa (St Pete Beach) in Nov and Jan a number of times. It's just the nicest break from our chilly midwest winter at that time, and it's only about a 2hour flight from ORD! I just enjoy the great seafood and the sun and the sand for two days and then go back to work refreshed. I've also done Las Vegas on a long weekend.

New York City

NO in winter - other than right at Mardi Gras for eating, drinking etc

Fall - NH or Maine for hiking, walking on the beach etc.

New York City for a snowy winter weekend.

Interesting to see what everyone's responses are. We're currently living in Miami, so I think we're looking for an excuse to break out the sweaters (too bad I donated all my coats when I moved down here!). I agree though, New Orleans is always a wonderful trip, and I escaped this past spring to Seattle for a few days and was wonderful.

So is New York crazy around holiday time?

San Francisco ... because it gets its best weather in the fall and the cultural/arts/nightlife season is in full flight.

New York is the best around the holidays as is Chicago. Nothing beats a long walk to take in all the holiday lights and decorations, and winding down the day at a cozy bar or restaurant in front of a fire.

Another suggestion -- Montreal. The shopping is wonderful, it's a beautiful city and the U.S. dollar goes a long way!

Oops! Sorry, I just realized you were only looking for U.S. cities...scratch Montreal!

If it were Fall I'd pick Fall pilgrimage in Natchez, Miss since EVERY time I plan to go something happens to prevent it, same is true of San Francisco for my birthday in Sept. I picked Natchez because I live in New Orleans and wouldn't want to go very far for just a weekend.

FIVE times I've planned to go to SF and five times some disaster has happened to stop me. I'm up to four times with Spring and Fall pilgrimages for Natchez. I've done both years ago, but in recent years thats been the case, its like a curse!

NYC and upstate for the tree changing.

Fall - Massachusetts where the leaves turn beautifully

Winter - New York during the holidays or Miami/Orlando, Florida

Fall or Winter Weekend I'd be over the hill to Calistoga for massage(s),foot reflexolgy, perhaps a facial followed by lounging in heated mineral pools and jacuzzi spas. Of course all that luxurating would really take it out of a person, so I would find myself needing a break for sustanance at the All Seasons Cafe or Catahoula or Brannans. On a nice fall day, I'd have lunch by the creek at the Calistoga Hotel. Then I'd wander across the street
to my favorite spa shop, Wexford & Woods, into the Wine Exchange, and definetly the bookstore! Of course we'd have a limo to ferry us to and from-it's dangerous to drive after being spa'd! LOL

Vermont... I've wanted to go there and it is really not a long drive from where we are in NY State.
