On a recent trip we had a disappointing lunch at L’Osteria del forno ($45, no wine) and, the next day a delicious lunch at Calzone’s sidewalk cafe ($31).

Calzone's is beguiling free of the attitude that pervades the self-satisfaction at L'Osteria del forno where tiny portions can be paid for with cash only.

Totally agree with Pam..you can't compare Boston or NYC Italian to SF..good but not even close.
Hope you went to Tadich, Boulevard and Taylor's Refresher for a ahi burger.
Buena Vista for the Irish Coffee too!

I have had several good meals at Calzone's, happytrailstoyou. I almost forgot about them. I have always enjoyed their gnocchi.

But truly no Italian restaurant in the US serves food as it is prepared and served in Italy, well not that I have ever found at least. Sometimes I wish I could just be in Italy for three hours just so I could eat!
