If you could live anywhere in the US?

The american dream: I work from home, can live anywhere with an internet connection. Looking for a little slice of heaven type of place..mountains, national parks, wildlife, some land maybe. 200K or less range. any ideas?

Loki Oct 22nd, 2003 07:46 AM

For me, it would be Northern California, but I'd like to be closer to Marin Country and $200k wouldn't get you far, but if some people know the areas further north, they might be able to help.

based on what you wrote:
Western Montana
Central or western Oregon
Area around Lake Tahoe
Northern Arizona
Western North Carolina
Vermont

Definitely Lake Tahoe - Nevada side (no state taxes!) 200k will be tough though.
You may be able to find a fixer-upper.

Topsail Beach, NC with a 37 foot Grady Martin on my canal front pier.

Meesthare Oct 22nd, 2003 08:35 AM

Hawaii - specifically the Big Island.

Texas Big Bend. Tons of wildlife and a super national park, plus mountains. Land is really, really cheap and your nearest neighbors might be 10 miles away.

If cost were no issue, San Francisco or maybe San Diego.
For 200K..the mountains of NC most likely, at least they are a familiar beauty. And the snow might not be as bad as Wyoming or Montana :)

1.) St John, US Virgin Islands
2.) Key West, FL
3.) New Orleans, LA
4.) Wilmington, NC
5.) Charleston, SC

(But it's not too bad here in Raleigh, NC!) :)

Your budget certainly doesn't allow "anywhere in the US" especially when you want some "land" with it. But friends of mine "retired" to a piece of beautiful land (10 or 20 acres, I'd say)and built a cabin along the national forest area of the Ozarks for a whole lot less than you're talking. It's really pretty spectacular there -- and dirt cheap, if you don't need a lot of civilization.

You don't say how much land...but you can still find houses for under 200k in and around the Sequim ("skwim") community on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Absolutely gorgeous scenery, a national park a short drive away, a herd (actually two) of elk that wander through town, dramatic beaches almost at your doorstep, plus some very good restaurants, shopping, cultural activities about 30 minutes away in Port Townsend (which is a wonderful place to like, but it's difficult to find much under the 200k mark).
Current anomalies (like the rainstorms pounding western WA at the moment), Sequim has one of the most beautiful climates in the U.S. --for about 8 months of the year, it feels like late spring, with lots of sunshine.

Forgot to add that WA state has no income tax (yet).

Hush BTilke. H and I have our eye on Sequim...Don't want too many heading there and raising real estate prices! ;-)

e_roz Oct 22nd, 2003 09:23 AM

I love the Northwest. ORegon and Washington. I'd prefer being near a city for activity options but don't think you could do it for that price. I bet you could on the outskirts though!

dprahl, I have lived and worked around the world and in large American cities. The American Dream came to me in the form of the internet when I was able to move to a rural midwest area where the cost of Everything is so much cheaper. My clients are mostly on the east and west coast, where they are willing to pay higher prices for my services. I live along a beautiful river, two story home, a barn, and on eight acres which cost Much less than your 200K price range. I see deer and other wildlife almost every day. The real estate taxes for my eight acres of heaven are less than my prior home on a tiny lot in suburbia. Check out any area in the mid west or western states. Internet access is available everywhere.

We now have electricity here in Northwest Montana and even have an internet server.
Howver I would recomend ALL or ANY of the above mentioned places.
Won't be long before the state hits a million people!!!
Yikes!

kaudrey Oct 22nd, 2003 02:57 PM

Colorado!

Ani Oct 22nd, 2003 05:05 PM

Fort Collins, Colorado...oh wait, I DO live here! woohoo!

Gekko Oct 22nd, 2003 05:50 PM

It's certainly not in your budget, so I guess it isn't "anywhere," but I'll take the cultural and financial center of the universe any day -- New York City.

Treck Oct 22nd, 2003 06:15 PM

I agree with Grcko, NYC would be my choice.
