And the eateries. There are several on the long winding road up thru the forest. We did the "Oyster Bar' yesterday...spectacular!!! and the view was magical.

I just noticed this post and coincidentally had just driven up Chuckanut Drive to Bellingham WA with 2 girlfriends. We'd been in the Mt. Vernon/Burlington area (Skagit County WA) to check out the tulip fields. March weather had been chilly, so enjoyed the daffodil fields with most tulips still to bloom.

Chuckanut hugs the shoreline and is such a pleasant alternative to the I-5. The Oyster Bar's been a local legend on the drive for decades.

When (if) you come, drive to LaConner for lunch (Kirstin's) and then shop, drive slowly thru the marvelous countryside, see the tulips and daffodils (cars were parked practically in the middle of the street yesterday to gawk), and then go to Chuckanut drive, and/or Bellingham and catch the Oyster Bar on the way back. Lovely!!!

My son will be in Portland and on to Seattle in a few months..maybe I should tell him..one of his friends lives in Bellingham.

Scarlett, have been thinking about your son and that the whole Skagit/Whatcom County areas link up in ways that provide for interesting alternatives to I-5 for northbound travellers from the Greater Seattle area. (conversely for southbound travellers from Vancouver BC and Bellingham)

North of Seattle is a ferry from Mukilteo to Clinton on southern tip of Whidbey Island, then a drive north on the picturesque island (Langley and Coupeville are worth a drive-by or an overnight stay) to Highway 20, part of the Cascade Loop, which connects to the tulip fields and is close to La Conner mentioned above. There's also Farm to Market Road off 20 north to tiny Edison and Bow and the start of the Chuckanut.

For those west of Seattle, or coming from the Olympic Peninsula, there's the Port Townsend to Keystone ferry, docks near Fort Casey and Coupeville on Whidby Island.

Nearby Anacortes has ferries that connect to the San Juan Islands and Sidney (Victoria) BC.
