Ideas for travel w/ teens
 

ok, need some fodorite input. The last couple of years we've taken our teen daughters on a long weekend trip in early Dec. One year it was NYC to see Blue Man Group and NYC sights and last year it was Chicago to see Wicked. This will be the first year of college for one so we will probably have to go in Nov or over her winter break - if she still wants to come. I need some ideas...no tropical vacations or sunny destinations as we have one non-sun loving one and as we'll be flying out of Asheville/Greenville we won't have time to do West Coast. They've done D.C w/ school...ideas please???

We have some of the same ages and we're doing GTNP & Yellowstone this fall. Good luck with the planning!

That's a little tough, since you will be in winter and may hit bad weather if you don't pick a Sunny spot. Any music Fans? Nashville, Memphis or Austin would be fun. The latter may be sunny though.

Williamsburg, VA. What about a ski vactaion?

Savannah or Charleston, Philadelphia, Boston. I would vote for Boston but it may be too far for a weekend.

They've been to Boston. Philadelphia is a possibility or Baltimore...ski vacation maybe but doubt we'll find any decent snow in the east in November.

Why don't you take them to Atlanta? Don't know their cultural preferences, but there are music venues galore that cater to every taste, including some smaller/alternative clubs. The ballet, the symphony, the aquarium, the High Museum will probably have something spectacular, the shopping is pretty good, too. The Fox theater always has some Broadway touring show on. Atlanta has the added advantage of not being too far away--in fact, from Asheville you could easily drive. But perhaps you have, and are too familiar with Atl. to make it a fun destination?

New Orleans

atlanta is too close to be considered a "treat/special" destination. While New Orleans certainly has a lot of history, architecture etc I don't like the atmosphere in the city itself - especially not for that age.

San Antonio might be a good choice that time of year.

What about Toronto or Montreal?

We have two teenagers and have taken two separate weekend fall trips to Boston in the last two years. They were both fairly short trips but we had a great time...strolled along the Freedom Trail, ate great seafood, drove out into the countryside a little. It's a different "flavor" compared to NY and DC.

If they want a more "outdoorsy" trip we had a fabulous weekend at Shanendoah national park in Virginia/West Virginia. We stayed at a cool log cabin lodge and hiked...some of the overlooks were stunning.

I rushed through earlier and didn't see where you said they'd been to Boston...We did like Baltimore also, but probably not quite as much. We went to Camden Yards to watch the Orioles (but your timing would probably be after baseball season) and we thought Fort McHenry was kind of cool.

topping this....I guess I'll run through where we have taken them so I can get some other ideas...would not be adverse to ski vacation but time is limited and it is probably doubtful we would get good snow. Again - it will probably be a long weekend trip sometime in mid Nov or Dec.
They've been to Atlanta, Orlando, Charleston, Boston, NYC, Chicago, San Antonio. They are not the hiking teen types and one is not keen on sun/tanning type vacations.
Right now we are leaning towards Quebec, Toronto, Baltimore...maybe Austin and probably in that order - any other suggestions? Remember, we're flying out of Greenville (SC)or Asheville (NC). They are troupers about cold weather - last year's trip to Chicago was w/ wind chill factor significantly below 0 degrees.

Philly is a great destination for teens. Since it seems like they enjoy Broadway shows, check to see if any are playing. Bring them to a high-energy restaurant such as Tangerine. Even the Constitution Center will appeal. Its a museum but it presents the info in a fun way. Shopping at Urban Outfitters or on South St. A day at the zoo will be peaceful and crowd-free in the winter. There are a lot of indoor exhibits.

Since they don't mind the cold, how about Minneapolis, MN? There is the Mall of America and numerous theatres (the New Guthrie just opened), the Walker Museum, and over in St. Paul is the Science Museum. In late November and December, there is the Holidazzle Parade.

Toronto is a great destination. Thatre, music, cool hip and ethnic neighborhoods and cool sites. Check to see if any Broadway shows are playing. If you went to Toronto you could also do Niagra Falls!!!!!!!!!!!
