ideas for an "interesting" place right on the water in San Diego county

My wife wants to get away to a inn, hotel (or motel even) for two days were we can step right out to walk on the beach. More interested in character and cleanliness than posh.

Any ideas for a special spot on the coast in San Diego or Orange County?

Many thanks!

What comes to mind are several different places..Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach that has cottages built on a pier and that is really cool..
Sea Lodge Hotel in La Jolla Shores is oceanfront and great beach/quaint town.
Laguna Beach's, Surf and Sand is oceanfront and has a really great vibe..

Hotel Del in Coronado. Beach, sea bresszes, fun town walkable.
Tower 23..named after a lifeguard tower 23 on the beach in PAcific Beach near La Jolla.
If military affiliated you can rent rooms on the bases and there are some clean but rustic cabins on the ocean Camp Pendeleton.
Otherwise you might want to check out condo rentals in Del MAr. I think others have used VBRO?

Will she consider walking down a set of stairs to reach the beach???

We loved the Pacific Terrace Hotel on Pacific Beach and would stay there again in a heartbeat. Check out:

We have stayed at and enjoyed Ocean Park Inn www.oceanparkinn.com

Do report back on where you stay and how it was.

I second the suggestion for the Hotel del Coronado. It is historic, luxurious, and a great beach location in a quaint and interesting little town.

HI katiekate, the Montage was amazing. We spent our anniversary night there after 3 nights at the Del. It is totally in a class all it's own. Our room had a soaking tub with full bath amentities including a bath pillow, piped in music, bath salts, etc. The service at the entire resort was spectacular and the setting that the Montage is in is absolutely gorgeous. :)

We loved the location and dined at the Studio that night. We spent the next morning swimming in the Mosaic pool and sunning in the white sand beach there.

In the evening there was Steve Siu on the piano who took my request for "Grown Up Christmas List" when we renewed our vows on the balcony over looking the pool and ocean.

It was truly a place with the WOW factor, we booked on the Laguna Beach dot Com website and got our room $425/night, it was normally a $745/night room. Loved it! Any questions on the Montage, ask away and Happy Holidays! ***kim*** ((f))
