South of the Border in Georgia (I think) off I-95, very tacky tourist stop on way to/from Florida.

marilyn Jul 19th, 2002 11:24 AM

yo, baby, this is a first. first time into this site; first time into this concept...top o' the line and bottom o' the barrel all at the same time. nothin' better in the world than learnin' and laughin'. heading out to sedona and grand canyon area for the first time in my life with my fabulous daughter in her early 20's. now i'm thinking of also incorporating some of your sumptuously entertaining ideas like route 66ing it and didn't i read something about a cheesy lake tahoe side trip? if i'm not to late in adding this post to all your wonderful notes...just wanna say THANKS for all the fabby fabby ideas and guffaws. M.

The Minnesota State Fair, which is held the end of August, is right up there. Take in Machinery Hill (farm equipment), go to the dairy building to watch Princess Kay of the Milky Way's bust being carved in a 100-lb. block of butter in a refrigerator and finish the night with an amateur talent show at the Bandshell. Plan to take in a Saint Paul Saints game at Midway stadium just down the road the next evening -- Haircuts and backrubs while you watch the game! Don't miss the pig mascot, who brings out the balls for the umpire.

Gatlinburg, TN. Definitely!

Gene Jul 20th, 2002 11:12 AM

Is South of the Border where PeeWee Herman stayed in his movie "PeeWee's Big Adventure"?

Cali Jul 20th, 2002 11:27 AM

We love the Minnesota State Fair and try to be in MN for it every year if possible. It is a good old fashioned State Fair.

Dave Jul 20th, 2002 11:32 AM

The Minnesota State Fair is cheesy but not as Velveeta as the Wisconsin State Fair. Both are in the top 5 cheesy locales to visit.

Patti Jul 20th, 2002 11:32 AM

South of the Border is south the NC/SC border and is in SOUTH Carolina.

I am surprised though -NO ONE has nominated Atlantic City NJ and that has to have the cheesiest, seemiest, dirtiest main street that I have ever seen.

Mars CHEESE Castle in Wisconsin...

The worlds largest thermometer in California...

The Mayflower in Mass...(don't forget Plymouth rock while you're there!)

I haven't read thru this post in its' entirety --- if no one else has mentioned this, it's GOT TO BE IN THE TOP TEN OF CHEESINESS --- the "SPAM MUSEUM" in Austin, Minnesota.

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/MNAUSspam.html
Weeki Watchi Springs, Florida -- underwater mermaids perform as you observe through a window. Tacky!

Al Aug 13th, 2002 12:52 PM

topping for fodorite.

gigi Aug 13th, 2002 01:00 PM

WHERE IS "Weeki Watchi"? Just saw the movie 'Sunshine' this weekend and main character (played by Edie Falco) used to be a mermaid in the show. It sounds soooo cheesy, I'd love to check it out the next time I'm in Florida.
Dollywood and Gatlinburg in Tennessee, just outside of the Smoky mountains. The Smoky mountians are beautiful, and a nice side trip, but you will not find a tackier place on earth than Dollywood (in Pigeon Forge, TN) and Gatlinburg, TN.

Fanny Aug 13th, 2002 01:28 PM

no, not gatlinberg - this is where Big Al and I consumated - and it was a thrill to be on the edge of the Smokies at the time. Kinda of my own version of the mile high club, but with our feet on the ground. And they were, indeed. Al has this fear of flying fobic, and I'm not too thrilled about getting off either, or is that lifting off. anyway, it was love at 1500 feet, and I'm still giddy from the thin air. Afterward we celebrated at the local roadside, and then it was off to cherokee for an unto them hills. G was great.

Dollywood.
Dollywood.
Dollywood.

Oh, and did I mention Dollywood?

ron Aug 13th, 2002 03:48 PM

with out a doubt the Salem, MA witch museum.

CheeseLover FORGOT to add Cheesehaven in Port Clinton, Ohio. It's a deli type store that has been there for at least 50 years! It's at the corner of Route 53 and Route 163. Route 163 will take you into Marblehead to see the Prehistoric Forest.

Also, while visiting Cheesehaven, you can take Route 53 towards Catawba Island to Mon Ami winery for some Lake Erie wine (ugh!).

Have fun!
x Aug 14th, 2002 06:02 AM

Maureen-Not all the Lake Erie wine is bad. Some of it has won national awards. Don't lump it all together.

As to Cheesehaven-You are correct, I don't see what the draw to that place is, same with Prehistoric Forest.
