Looking for a scenic, cute small town(s) to explore for a long weekend in Vermont.

Have been to Stowe, Woodstock, Burlington, Montpelier. Looking for something new?

Did I mention it ought to be scenic?

Where can I go? HELP!

How about upstate New York? The adirondacks are gorgeous and fairly close to Montreal.

I like the Lake Placid area a lot, but I have been there several times in the last few years.

I live in Lake Placid...but I love Middlebury, VT. It's a quaint, cute little town.

Sorry - Irishfest is on the shores of lake Michigan so guess there is where the scenic view comes in. :)

Well if your head does fall off, maybe you should go to Cumberland Head to get a new one!

It's a scenic area projecting out into Lake Champlain in New York.

I like the idea of Middlebury and you could go further south to Brandon where there's a wonderful French restaurant.

Or drive completely around Lake Champlain. The New York side was a bit depressing for me, but the Vermont countryside is spectacular. If you do that, you could also visit Fort Ticonderoga.

If you like hiking, try a short hike in the Snake Mountains near Middlebury.

Then there's Vergennes - in fact, I'd suggest going around the Middlebury area and the surrounding small towns and countryside.

Mona--Also, if you like hiking/nature walking you could do the Trail around Middlebury (TAM). DH and I have done part of it and it was so much fun. We hiked through cow pastures (with cows in them), through private farms, through woods, along the water. Check this link for what it's all about http://www.maltvt.org/.

Thanks for the great ideas. My hubby and I passed through Skaneateles (sp?) a few years ago. We had just enough time to have lunch and a quick walk. Ihad been thinking of returning. Problem is, the drive there is, if I remember correctly, extremely boring.

I always get Middlebury and Waterbury confused. But I think they're both supposed to be quaint places to visit.

Okay, we'll see...

We also will be making a trip next month to Vermont and will be staying in Middlebury for the first time at the Swift House Inn.

Anyone have a good restaurant suggestion other than the Swift House which I hear is quite good?

The French restaurant in Brandon is Cafe Province. There's an even better one in Vergennes called Black Sheep Bistro.

And I do agree that Middlebury is a really charming town.

The Swift House is very nice - best place in town. Their restaurant is good too. Another restaurant to check out is The Storm Cafe, in the stone mill at the base of the falls. It is small and very popular, so reservations are advised, especially on the weekends. (802-388-1063)

The restaurant in Brandon is Cafe Provence. It IS very nice, either for lunch or dinner. Black Sheep Bistro is small but excellent; however, best make reservations!

We recently went to the Shelburne Museum and stayed nearby in a B&B that was okay, but I think others are better.

The Inn at Baldwin Creek and Mary's restaurant, in Bristol, is fabulous. (You can find them on line if you want a peek.) We stayed there and loved the restaurant just last week. Not cheap, but very, very nice, with innkeepers that really know how to make guests feel pampered and comfortable.

Considering you are coming from Montreal, I have a suggestion for you. Cross over at Stanstead and travel down VT-14. A town I would recommend is Craftsbury, VT. They have some nice inns and real nice scenery. There are some great ponds to check out - Great Hosmer and Little Hosmer. You would also like Greensboro, VT.
