I-75 through Kentuck

I thought I posted this yesterday, but can't find it.

We plan to travel through KY from the Midwest to Florida. I understand that sections of I-75 are closed. Are there local detours? Rerouting the trip to other major highways would add an hour to our trip. I would think that some sort of detour would exist and be better than that.

How soon are you going?

The rockslide was an unplanned event.

Is I77 an option? Have driven that many times. Much prefer over I75. Where is your origination?

What their "midwest" is would be nice to know. I would guess they are coming from "west" to get to I75 south to Florida an not coming straight down 75.
more info.

It is usually helpful, LBloom to say why you prefer one route over another, don't you agree?

I'm sorry that I didn't think to put more information about our starting point.

The general route is from Indianapolis to Greer SC and then on to Orlando leaving the end of next week.

Thanks for the link to when the route might be reopened. That has valuable information. I had tried to google, but didn't get as far as you did!

LBloom - thanks for the information about I-77. I think it would be too far east to help us. But, of course, my reference to "midwest" didn't give enough information.

We had thought about going to Nashville and then east to avoid 75. That would add about an hour - but the link said whatever they are doing to work around I-75 adds about 40 minutes.

I have driven this many times. I would stick to i75 and at Asheville head down I26. It is really just a day's drive.

If you are travelling before it is open take a look at Route 25 which parallels the interestate. We actually drove that route back in the day when it took 2 days from OHIO to get to Knoxville!! On more recent trips when the interstate was difficult we got off and drove it south for a while.

I live in Nashville and have driven to Indy a few times (via I-65). I always seem to get stuck in Kentucky construction traffic. I haven't done it in a year+, so maybe they're done, but I'd check KDOT and see what the current status is before you assume it's an easier drive! If there are no construction issues, it is an easy drive, but that's a big if.

Once you get to Nashville, the drive to Knoxville is easy and pretty.

I pref I77 because it is less populous than I75, less traffic & congestion.

Gretchen Mar 10th, 2016 01:29 PM

I also drive I77 but from Indianapolis it doesn't make travel sense to get to Greer, SC. It DOES depend on where you want to go!! LOL

The south bound lanes of I-75 have reopened, at least according to this AP Story. North bound is still closed, but at least one lane is expected to be open by Mar. 24.

That is a beautiful stretch of the highway. It must have been a massive slide!!

Since northbound seems a little iffy for their return from Orlando they could come up I95 to Charleston, I 26 to Columbia and then I77 north to Charleston, WVA. Then take Route 35 (near Charleston) to I70 near Dayton and on home to Indy.
35 is a BEAUTIFUL open 4 lane road. Very untravelled.
