I-70 closed and maybe for a few days
One of the drawbacks to Colorado is that we don't have a lot of good east west roads. A huge rock slide in Glenwood Canyon has taken out I-70 both ways. One report has a ten foot hole punched into one of the road beds And unfortunately there are not any good work arounds that does not involve long detours and two lane roads with a winter storm coming in. This is going to be a mess for several days.

The train tracks out too?

I assume since GS is much farther west, this won't affect the drive from Denver to Breckenridge??
|
I believe the train tracks are on the other side of the river.
Great photos at http://www.denverpost.com/ci_14633690. Thankfully no one was injured or killed. It is unlikely the drive to Breckenridge from Denver would be impacted by this. |
Glenwood canyon is about little over an hour west of Breckenridge. The only ski area severe affected will be Aspen. My guess is the drive to Breck might be better because through traffic will be routed on US 40 through Winter Park and Steamboat. The train tracks are on the other side of the river for most of the distance. At one point I-70 does cross to the south side of the river for a short distance. This is not the first rock slide to take out sections of I-70 in the canyon. My guess is probably in the same area.

Wow -- just saw the live TV coverage. Much worse than prior times. Several holes punch completely through the road. One boulder is the size of a two story house. Makes the men and equipment look small. It is going to be a while -- in the range of a couple of weeks. The recommended detour is a very slow 220 miles around. For all practical purposes Aspen is almost done for the season.
