hyatt regency-savannah

I know that this hotel have been undergoing some much needed renovations. Can anyone tell me who stayed there recently or who lives there what things look like now. Thank you!

starrsville Mar 3rd, 2005 08:56 AM

Some people like it, many of us don't. When you get a room overlooking the river, you generally are happy, even when the room is a bit worn and musty. This hotel just doesn't feel like a real Hyatt experience to me. It is mid-point on Bay and River Streets, but there are more favored hotels (with nicer rooms) within two blocks in either direction. I've stayed there for conferences and just don't like the "big city/ big hotel" atmosphere when I'm in Savannah. I'd much rather stay in one of the plentiful inns or nicer hotels elsewhere in the historic district. It is very strange idea when the Hampton Inn outclasses a Hyatt...in my humble opinion anyway! The Renissance is very nice, but their views aren't that great. The location right at City Market can't be beat.

The Hyatt Regency Savannah is finishing up or has just finished a multi million dollar renovation.

I love the Hyatt. The location, service, atmosphere, and Hyatt feel make it an excellent choice.

Oh gasp, a GH debate! Watch for some heavy statement anytime now.

starrsville Mar 3rd, 2005 09:20 AM

TravelActually - Two questions...

1) What does GH mean?

2) Who were you before you starting posting using "TravlActually" yesterday?

5 posts to your name and none of them read as if they are coming from a novice FF poster.

Anyone care to comment on the Mulberry Inn?

bonniebroad Mar 3rd, 2005 10:53 AM

Lauralee, the Mulberry Inn is my picky, big sister's FAVORITE place to stay in Savannah. Stays there every chance she gets, and loves the rooms, afternoon teas, location, yadda yadda. Don't think you'd be disappointed!

bonniebroad Mar 3rd, 2005 10:55 AM

Forgot to say, I'm with GoTravel. I love the Hyatt and it's location. I did have some problems with my room last visit, but when I complained, immediately got a much nicer one with a riverview. That was years ago..... I'm sure, with renovations, it'll be much nicer than ever.

Leone = Joe = Blacktie = TravelLaughter = TravelFirst = TravelsFirst = TravelsActually = the other 57 varieties I've lost track of.

Never fear; this obnoxious poster has already de-registered the new name, soon to appear as something equally obnoxious, posting from his government job on a computer you and I helped pay for -- along with his salary.

evinrudemtr Mar 3rd, 2005 11:30 AM

The refurbishment is underway, the pool will be open spring '05. All in all $10 M investement. Recommend you consult TripAdvisor.com, where you'll see some mixed messages by guests. One poster mentioned bathroom issues, try a search and you'll find that. Good luck, listen to starsville who sounds like she knows from practical experience. This is a travel forum, take your personal irks elsewhere, jeez louise.

We have actually stayed at both Hyatt and Hampton Inn. Prefer location of Hampton - although it is only a few blocks away it is up one level from River Street and therefore easier to access historic district. On 2 occasions, found staff at Hyatt to be less than helpful - almost rude - and have found opposite at Hampton Inn.

Last visit to Hyatt was in October 2004, and some renovations were done, some were not - it seems as if good location rooms may have been renovated first, since we got a mediocre room with view of nothing (admittedly, room was free with Hyatt "points"). While both are generic big hotels, Hyatt somehow feels more generic, if that is possible.

OO Mar 3rd, 2005 01:00 PM

And he's back again, Leone = Joe = Blacktie = TravelLaughter = TravelFirst = TravelsFirst = TravelsActually = evenrudemtr now. TravelsActually unregistered that name and got a brand new one.

If only you had a life you were happy with Joe, maybe you wouldn't feel compelled to do this. No such luck, though.

I would like to hear from someone who has been in the renovation. Obviously it will not be "worn"...it's brand new. 10 million worth of new.

Mulberry is a nice enough place laurelee...it is a Holiday Inn, nothing fancy at all, but nicer than the typical Holiday Inn. I have not seen the inside in several years so will not comment on the state of their current decor.

I'd love to know what a GH debate is too evinrudemtr

Hyatt's redo of its rooms, long in planning, is underway, and the upgrades promise to be splendid. Check their website. The swimming pool is slated to open by the time warm weather arrives. It should be fine, given its fortuitous location. Nonetheless, the suggestion to research is sound, and will pay rich dividends. Enjoy your trip, and my apologies for trolls who continue to rant, drown out legit discussions about travel. It's a real disservice.

OO Mar 3rd, 2005 01:46 PM

And hi again Joe, that was fast.

I just looked at the website. They have copied our rooms, right down to the headboard and pillow rolls..rant. This is a decor my DH implemented for the Grand Hyatt Tampa which was met with such rave reviews it has since been used in any number of renovations for Hyatt. They all use different colors, but otherwise it is identical. San Antonio, his new hotel, has used it also ($16 million renovation) so we feel sort of at home. :)

My affection for the Hyatt Savannah, which was his former hotel, is no secret. We lived in the hotel for 4 years...it was home and we loved Savannah. The hotel has a terrific location, truly the best on the river with the Westin's a close second, and 2nd only because it is across the river, rather than in the historic district. A renovation was well overdue as it had been 8 years since the last one, and it does sound nice.

Now...unless they are building a brand new swimming pool in a new location, that is not something I would hold my breath for--I will be 100% honest in anything I write (was that pointed enough Joe?) It was downstairs, below lobby level and very small and unappetizing. They'd have to move it out of its location to give it any appeal.

The Grand Bed mentioned in the website is fabulous...take it from someone who has been sleeping on one as we are in transit between the Tampa Hyatt and DH's new hotel and living in a guest room there. Someone described it as sleeping on a cloud, and it is every bit of that. The pillowtop mattress is enormously thick and comfy...there are 6 pillows on the beds...nice pillows, not the awful foam ones, and a duvet with covers that can actually be washed, and are white so they do not leave you guessing as to whether or not they have been. Westin started the trend with their Heavenly Bed, and now both Hyatt and Marriott (and probably others) have jumped on the bandwagon. Hyatt's is the Sealy posturpedic 720 series...so wonderful to sleep in I'm thinking about getting one for our new house.

My interest is not in promoting that hotel. As I've said repeatedly when I write about Hyatts...whether or not they do well is not my concern. They do not need to be sold by me...every one of them has a full sales force whose job it is to do nothing but that. I do like to share my experiences with people looking for input though, and heavens knows, I've experienced plenty of Hyatts, so I will write about them on Fodors, but I always identify myself in doing so. I should add for those who haven't seen it, that I have not always written positively about specific hotels...

I will also say, in defense of Hampton Inns, some of them can be outstanding. In our cross country drive to our new home in San Antonio, we stayed at one in Daphne, AL outside Mobile, that was fabulous. Their decor was as nice as many Hyatts. We returned from dinner to find that we had had turn down service. The breakfast buffet the next morning consisted of sausage, biscuits, French toast, cereal, fresh fruit, fresh juices, sweet rolls, bagels, yogurt (and I'm probably leaving some out) in a lovely dining room...all at no charge. They were probably in hot competition with the new Hilton across the street...but you might find the same scenario at any city Hampton Inn that faces that sort of competition. We were very pleasantly surprised and had a delightful stay (oh...it was a room facing Mobile Bay as well..lovely!)

I agree that opinions are what make this travel forum great.

I assume that GH = Grand Hyatt - which the Hyatt in Savannah is not and won't be after the renovation is completed. I've stayed in Grand Hyatts and I can't imagine the Savannah Hyatt will ever be designated a Grand Hyatt. I checked the website to make sure before I posted my question.

OO, I hope your husband's tenure followed the opening of the Marriott Riverfront, because until then my industry held all of their events there and the staff was horribly rude - consistently, horribly rude.

Convention business moved to the Marriott Riverfront when it was new and then to the Westin. Personal opinion makes the world go around but I (and most of my peers) don't like to stay at the Westin because we feel isolated on the island. Savannah is a walking town and it's a pain to wait for a water taxi or drive over the bridge to get to the city (IMHO).

I like Hamptons in general, but the majority of Hamptons in GA are the basic variety. I've run into a couple in the Carolinas that are nice. The Hampton Inn in Savannah is very nice - truly lovely and I agree that the staff is always pleasant and helpful, the FREE breakfast is good and the location can't be beat. You are equidistant from River Street and the Pink House - but don't have the put up with the noise and crowds of River Street. The last time I stayed there I had a beautiful view of the river.

I like Hyatts in general and perhaps after $16M the Hyatt Regency Savannah can win me back.

Nope. It's not going to happen. I just checked online for my visit in April. Hyatt is $265, Doubletree is $170 and Hampton Inn is $130. No light announcing a ship's passing is worth that big of a price difference.

GoTravel Mar 3rd, 2005 04:20 PM

starrsville, the Hyatt Savannah has never been flagged a Grand Hyatt by the Hyatt brand.

OO, I have many happy memories in that hotel (the first time I ever took my stepdaughters on a trip with just the three of us, my best friend and I on a working vacation for a week staying there having a blast, St. Paddys with my wonderful gay boyfriend, and so on).

I have great affection for that hotel and I've been away too long. It's time to go back.

I do not think you've ever pushed Hyatt hotels.

starrsville Mar 3rd, 2005 04:31 PM

GoTravel, I am very aware that the Hyatt Regency Savannah has never been a Grand Hyatt. That's why I asked TravelActually what he meant in his post when he used GH. Grand Hyatt was my only and best guess.
