I have never been to the Hyatt resort, reported to be the next savior of Cambridge. It is probably pretty swank; the House Republicans met there a month ago and President Bush spoke to them. The Choptank River is very wide in Cambridge and the city's establishment is looking to double the size of Cambridge and make it into a retirement community for those who don't want to retire to Florida and its eight month summers and exploding growth.
There are places to visit in the Cambridge vicinity. St. Michael's, half an hour away, is the most touristy town (I'm not including Ocean City) on the Eastern Shore. The Chesapeake Waterman's Museum is located there and is worth an hour of your time. Tilghman Island, an honest waterman's town, is twenty minutes west of St. Michael's. Oxford is a quaint town only twenty or so minutes from Cambridge. South of Cambridge is the Blackwater Reserve of swamps and birds- a pretty fun drive.
As for dining, Cambridge does not have much in the way of fine dining. For the vicinity, there are several places. In Oxford, there is the Robert Morris Inn (built 1710) where the crab cakes are excellent. At Secretary, fifteen miles east of Cambridge, there is the Suicide Bridge Restaurant on the Choptank River. Easton, fifteen minutes north of Cambridge, has several nice restaurants including the Inn at Easton and the Tidewater Inn. St. Michael's also has several top notch restaurants including the expensive Inn at Perry Cabin and my favorite, Michael Rorke's Town Dock. Tilghman Island has Harrison's Chesapeake Inn with fine seafood and family-style eats.
Cambridge itself has some of the ugliest slums on the Eastern Shore. One of the first urban riots of the 60s occurred in Cambridge in 1963.
