Hurricane names
Hi,
I have a question about the naming of Hurricanes. I understand that at the biginning of the hurricane season they start with an "A" name then go to a "B" name, and so on through the alpahbet. I also know that they alternate between male and female names. But what I want to know is how they pick the male and female names? Is that alphabetical too? Who picks the names? |

Isn't Google wonderful??

And my name is not on the list :(
|
Faina, I think it was used this year a few times... here comes Hurrican Ivan Again, Jeanne Again....
|
LOL, Austin, thank you for my 15 seconds of fame!
|
Names of the four storms that hit Florida this year will all probably be "retired."
|
I remember in the "Old Days" when they only used female names.
|
Poochie-
Thanks for not referring to it as the GOOD "old days"! IMHO, isn't naming a hurricane "Ivan" just asking for trouble? What's next? Atilla? |
I just read a little article in the paper asking how they name hurricanes. It said Originally they named hurricanes based off of the days Saint. I had never heard that before, kind of ironic.

About a month ago I was watching CNN's morning show. Their replacement female anchor brought up the question about why all the hurricanes are named after women. Fortunatly she was corrected on air. They alternated male/female about twenty/thirty some years ago! Truly amazing that a TV anchor did not know this fact.
|
Jor, it still amazes you a TV person doesn't know something or "stretches" the facts? I live in America for almost 15 years, how long have you been here?
|
Well jor, that doesn't surprise me any more than while watching CNN in Europe all last summer, the weather gal, Femie Okay (or something like that) kept pointing to Miami, Florida and saying "right down here at the tip of the Florida panhandle". Ouch!
And while some of you are remembering how hurricanes used to be named, heck, I'm so old I remember the summer of hurricane # 7. (That wasn't too long after the 40 day and 40 night rain!) |
FainaAgain, Wow, almost 15 years! How long have I been here??? You pose your question like someone who concerns themselves with how long ago you moved to the US compared to other recent immigrants. You sound like "I've been here longer than you have, ha ha, a ha ha"
FYI, I was born here nearly a half century ago Sweetheart. |
Jayne11159 - is that a poke at me??
:(( |
jor I suspect that waas Faina's point, if she an immigrant knew this about TV anchors you a "real American" should know better since you had grown up with this stuff :)
|
Indie: exactly my point, thank you!
|
Oops Atilla--I meant to post that on the "Attitudes" thread!!! :)>-
