Hurricane IVAN-seeking news of Gulf Coast

I'm looking for news about Destin and Fort Walton/Fort Walton Beach... A large branch of my family is there, and we haven't been able to reach them. Having trouble sorting out realities from embelishments on the TV up here in the NE. We're so worried about them. Does anyone know a good local website, please?

www.al.com (Mobile)
www.pensacolanewsjournal.com (NW Fla.)

Hope it helps and good luck!

(Communications in the affected area are still spotty as is electricity, so don't get panicked yet!)

thanks Dan-
it helped. I finally reached them today, Some damage about as bad as everyone around them, pretty bad, but they're physically OK!
It feels so helpless being up here (NY) stuck at work and wanting to be there helping them!!!
What a mess!

Glad everything is ok with them sognatrice. Thanks for letting us know. I'm sure you were terribly worried until you had news!

Thanks Statia, you are so kind-
I've been feeling really terrible for the last few hours. I was accused on another thread here of making up a story that I had relatives in Florida, and called an idiot.
It really hurt, because my family there is very real, and I'm so amazed by the effort they are making to keep it together. We're so happy they are OK and hope everyone continues to cope with all the mess they're having!
I wish you every good thing these days, and pray for these new storms to stay out at sea, or pass you by.

Thanks sognatrice, although I have to admit I wasn't thrilled to just receive an email alert about TD #13. November 30th can't get here fast enough these days....for any of us.

Continued good luck to your family. I know from experience that recovery after a major "blow" can be difficult.

Statia, we had a hurricane and two tropical storms last December so the messy weather does happen after the season is officially over.

Sucks doesn't it?

sognatrice, I don't think anyone meant to call you a name regarding your worry about your family. It was more the way you were behaving on that thread that was questionable.
Good to hear that your family is alright.
I know when I lived in NYC, I worried about my mom and daughter who live here in Florida..have lived here for years.
But a good sense of humor helps..and knowing it will end soon .

Yes, Go Travel, I was actually thinking the same thing when I made my post. We had "Lefthanded Lenny" here near the end of November a few years ago, and he sat over us stationary for a solid 72 hours.

We've also had one major hurricane here on the island near Christmas! But, thankfully I wasn't living here yet for that one.

Never say never. Here's to hoping it's a quiet "rest of the season" for all of us and that we don't have to cope with or worry about "Lisa."

Hi Statia-
I don't know how much of it can be believed, but they are now saying that TD #13 and Lisa are not too much of a threat right now. Hope it stays that way. They're talking about the "Ghost of Ivan" coming back around in a few days...
Time for Nature to take a Nap!!

The "ghost of Ivan", is already here.
From accuweather:
"What's left of Ivan is seen as a cluster of cloudiness off the Southeast coast. Showers and thunderstorms will move across Florida late Sunday night and Monday accompanied by gusty winds and locally heavy rain. Once out into the Gulf of Mexico, this feature could very well begin to regenerate and once again acquire tropical characteristics as it heads off to the west. This feature will then head toward the general direction of Louisiana and Texas by Wednesday and Thursday."

Incredible!

I appreciate all who responded to my initial question on this thread seeking some information about the Gulf Coast.

I got home from work tonight and read my personal email for the first in a couple of days.

I got the following message from someone on these boards. I had dared to disagree with this person, apparently this was a heinous sin, because they wrote:

"I don't know who you are or what your problem is but I warn you to stay away from me on the Fodor's forums."

OK. done.

This was sent to me early yesterday afternoon.

The person had my address from a note of concern I had sent them before Charley hit Florida. I now regret having sent that message, considering how they used my personal address.

Now I see that the same person came on to this thread a few hours later, to add yet another comment.

It seems to me that you can't have it both ways ma'am. I had already walked away the first time. Why follow me? Why not follow your own rules? Stop stirring the soup. It's never going to boil.

From now on, I'll use these forums as they were meant to be used, just for travel subjects. I strayed during these hurricanes, and still wish everyone well.

Best of luck to all of you. Bye now!
