"HUMORLESS" response to Kauai comment silliness

I'll probably get told off for expressing this, but IMHO it's increasingly tiresome and boring to have any post with questions about Kauai, answered by the small "in-gang" who like to jokingly "rag" on Kauai's supposed non-tourist-friendly qualities i.e. the chickens, mosquitoes, rain, yada yada yada. It's getting old. It's no longer cute and clever. Enough already!!
They are (with one exception) tourists themselves, so you'd think they'd want to help instead.
This group even has occasional "groupies" who for some reason, seek group members' approval.
You'd have to be a frequent Fodors visitor to "get" this. Reminds me of a bunch of kids in Jr High School who get off on telling in-jokes while those who don't belong, are bewildered.
Call me humorless if you like--though I'd dispute it
IDEA: Why don't the"KMART" folks start a separate thread, in which they can make their "in" comments to an appreciative audience (each other) and quit hijacking/interrupting other people's serious enquiries as they seek serious answers to vacation questions?

It must be disheartening to open a thread on a place you are very interested in, and instead of getting valuable information, you get this silly banter, even if you do "get" the joke. It is happening too often, and people who come to Fodors rarely will believe the "garbage" comments. Agreed, CaliNurse.

Thank you Nurse Ratchet.
I'll take my pills from now on.

I'm honored that you two thought the humor was as high caliber to be thought of as "Jr. High".

I guess Kauai threads will go back to:
Princeville in the summer/Poipu in the Winter.
Roys, Beach House for sunset, Keoki's, Hyatt's Tidepools, Pacific Cafe (closed), Coconuts, Kintaros...
VBRO...
One person get luggage/other gets rental.
NaPali Coast walking sticks, what kind of hiking boots, easy/hard.
Coco Palms reopen?
4 Wheel Drive for Polihale or convertible?
Need a passport?
Type of money exchange?
Sit on the left side of the plane if Trades are blowing etc etc....

Then the obligatory replies:
"Hawaii should have it's own forum".
"Use the 'Search this forum" since all of this has been discussed before" posting.

I will try to fit in and maybe offer just one piece of info that could even remotely help a first timer in Kauai since I never have before and I sincerely hope all of my future postings will meet with your approval.

BTW, I don't think you are humorless. I think you're very funny. California needs more funny nurses

Kal,

Funny - funny? or funny - peculiar?

I'm going to crawl under a coconut and consider what an unhelpful ingrate I am.

Many mahalos Nurse Ratchet for showing me my evil adolescent ways.

Just remember if you're renting a glass house on St.John, it is not wise to throw stones at our Buddy Bill.

Good Times!

Oops, time to take my medicine....

Agree CaliNurse.

Although, I must say, "they" may have their intended result ... at least with this traveller ... Kauai is not on the list of vacation destinations.

Agree whole-heartedly with you, CaliNurse

It's fine for those of us who are on the board all the time, and know that they are jokes among those who travel to Kauai, or Hawaii, often.

But I think it must be confusing to someone who is planning a first trip, and is new here. Not everyone gets the same old jokes if they are new here.

OK, back to planning my third Hawaii trip for next summer....But Kauai is not on the menu until my fourth trip, summer 2007

Point taken CaliNurse... so sad to see you take yourself so seriously and get so bent out of shape that you resort to name calling and psychoanalyzing what you think you know. I would have more respect for you if you would have laid it out straight.

No worries.

If CaliNurse is a nurse, you must be aware some feel laughter is good medicine (link, e.g.:www.umm.edu/features/laughter.htm and indeed look forward to more humorous travel posts.

And after all, even Fodor's=D> gave us a whole page of "smileys" ( http://www.fodors.com/community/smileys/ )

Kal: Jack wouldn't have given in so easily! I expected more from you!

I see the point, but call me a 'groupie'!
Humor is much better than some of the attacks that go on IMHO.

Regarding this definitely humourless post, my grandmother would say " What a pill"
Do you really think people making jokes makes any difference in what everyone thinks of Kauai?
This might remind you of a bunch of kids in Jr High but this posting reminds me of the grumpy old ex school teacher down the street.
I would far rather endure jokes on these threads than the nasty and vicious trolls etc that come out of the woodwork too often.
I think this might be a good time for a Fodor-break..that is what I do when it starts getting that important to me..
And what are K-Mart folks?

I've heard a lot aobut gangs, but never heard of "K-Mart Folks".

Does that mean they're blue-light "special"? Does it mean the cops with the blue lights should take them away? Or is it some secret reference to not being Wal-Mart folks?

As one who will never again go to Kauai -having read this gang's comments- I would at least like to understand them.

Can you please elaborate, CaliNurse? I find this fascinating.

While I see and respect your point, CaliNurse, I don't think you give too much credit to the reading audience. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most people try to read a bit before they ever post. And while it IS more difficult to read sarcasm than to see or hear it, most of us "get it".

I don't post too much here but I've a couple other boards where I'm more active. People have a tendency to form bonds and tell inside jokes...that's life. If I see something I don't like, or someone with whom I continually disagree, I just skip over their posts. If it really irritates me I will post to it, but mostly if the information is correct, not on the delivery of the information.

I guess my point is that I think it's more human nature than anything else, and you can either roll with it, or stew about it. I don't think you'll change people, but if it feels better to voice about it (and possibly hurt someone else's feelings) you are entitled to it.

Freedom of speech is a lovely gift.

gyppielou,

I love you! Good one about St. John!

As a new poster I immediately got the in-joke about Kaua'i and found it very refreshing, curious and easily ignored if that is what i wanted to do.

CaliNurse,

To claim that my posts have not been helpful is a BIG FAT JOKE!

While not mentioned by name, what is the deal bringing auntimaria into this? Because she lives on Kaua'i her information is usually the most accurate and fact based. It is not always what posters want to hear, but it is accurate. She has actually driven by rental properties to check them out for posters. She frequently posts updates on restaurant changess, new places to eat, concerts being held and other things that only a local would know.

-Bill

Hmmm... in 4 years on Fodor's I've read maybe 4 Hawaii-related posts, all of them about get-togethers, so can't agree or disagree... except with Kal and i'll leave you gessing if I agree or disagree!

CaliNurse, for how long are you here? Have you ever attended any get-togethers, met those people in real life? Just wonder why are you so fast to judge others?

I agree, "it's getting old". Including us. We all are not getting younger, let us live... and let each other live!

And I'd be happy to be confused with a Jr High age... sigh...

And too bad we don't have a K-Mart in San Francisco

Puh-leeze!

There are so many nasty personal attacks, inappropriate political discussions and ridiculously silly posts on this board (Sex Habits of Hawaiins-circa 1961, discussions of property taxes, etc.). I can't believe good-natured, harmless banter is being singled out as a problem.

As a first time traveler to Kauai in August, I found the help from the "in-gang" invaluable. I never felt their comments were exclusionary or snotty.

Why don't we ask recenty Kauai trip planners (Alisa, Mary2Go, Pdxgirl, daydreamin) if they felt "put off" when asking Kauai questions. They seemed to have accepted the valuable information they received with the good-natured spirit in which it was given.

"You'd have to be a frequent Fodors visitor to "get" this."

I came to this board looking for information on Hawaii, and as a brand new poster it was pretty easy to "get."

The reason I check the Fodor's boards several times a day a year after my very first question about Hawaii is because of the sense of humor and community most of the posters here seem to possess.
