Humidity in Hawaii?
 

We will be in Hawaii (oahu) from June 24th to July 1st. How bad is the humidity? Is it comparable to the humidity in Florida or New England? Better or worse? Thanks.

With the trade winds in Hawaii, I've always found it less stifling humidity than in Baltimore or St. Louis, for example. I hate humid heat, but have had no problem with Hawaii summer heat because of the breezes.

I just returned from Maui, and I was also worried about the humidity (I'm not fond of it or of heat in general), but the trade winds are truly refreshing and I didn't feel overly warm at any time, even with temps in the mid-eighties and higher. Of course, my hair went crazy, but I was comfortable.

Don't worry about the humidity. We just returned from Kauai, and the constant trade winds make the temperature seem cooler. Today (back in Atlanta) I was coming out of the grocery store, and I could definitely feel the humidity here.

I also agree about the crazy hair. Some of the pictures of me look pretty funny. I didn't even bother worrying about it while I was there.

The humidity on Oahu is in no way as bad as Florida - we visited Disneyworld one summer and I thought I had died and gone to hell.

Generally, the tradewinds really help. Sometimes though, we have what I've always heard called "Kona winds" - the trades are pretty nonexistent - it gets a little muggy then. These times are usually pretty brief, though.

Chepar, I think you must have been having the "Kona winds" while we were there visiting in May. While I am accustomed to the humidity here in the south, I thought it was pretty muggy and humid while we were there.

Or, perhaps it's just my maturity these days..it might not have been "hot" at all!

When we came home to Boston from a July week in Oahu, we found that Boston definitely felt much more humid, as well as hotter.

Actually, I think maybe we were having Kona winds during that time. I do recall it being pretty hot for about a week or so around that time.

I recall thinking to myself that it seemed to be pretty hot for it to be so early in the year.

I don't recall any Kona winds in May (Kona's blow from the south and bring vog/trades come from the northeast), but we did have a few days dominated by some of those pesky offshore storm systems that tend to interfere with the trades. Instead of the trades blowing, the air was relatively still and humid, with lots of those dramatic clouds that stack up mauka.
