Hudson River Valley - where to sleep?
 

Four of us including our 12 yo granddaughter want to visit the Hudson River area but we all want separate beds and we don't want to have to take out a loan to achieve it. Have looked into hotels/motels and all call a 2 br suite one with 2 queens. Any suggestions? Would like to travel there July 28-31. Many thanks. Matthias

What towns are you looking at? The Hudson River Valley covers a fairly large area, but some areas have mostly small inns and B&Bs, not larger hotels with many room choices.
If you need 4 beds , You will usually need 2 rooms. In many hotels, the second room just has one fold out sofabed.

How much are you willing to spend?
My educated guess would be that for a weekend in this popular area you would be looking at at least $150 per room per night in a fairly modest hotel.

We hope to be mostly in mid-Hudson to visit Hyde Park,etc. and also West Point. We also want to take a river cruise and do some hiking. We will avoid the weekend and spend three days midweek. All suggestions welcomed. Matthias

I also think you'll need 2 rooms with 2 beds in each. You're best looking for national chains for that (vs. smaller cute b & b's/inns which are unlikely to have 2 beds/room). The Days Inn in Newburgh (near West Point) has rooms for $80-90/night with 2 double beds. 2 of those will be less than $200/night.

Have you looked into renting a complete house? I have one reserved in Sleepy Hollow for September. Many of them will rent for a night or two, or a week or two. One I use a lot is VRBO and also HomeAway. Sometimes they are cheaper than hotels and you can make some of your own meals.

mclaurie, I don't know specifically about the Days Inn you mentioned, but Newburgh is really not the nicest of areas for vistors. It is certainly a convenient location, especially for West Point.
Other areas with several choices of hotels are Poughkeepsie on the other side of the Hudson River(also not great downtown, but there are some chain hotels on the outskirts)--close to Hyde Park.

Thanks so much for the input. I do believe we need to be in a chain hotel/motel. I've never stayed in a Days Inn. Right now we have a reservation for a 2 bedroom for 7/28 to 7/31 at Poughkepsie at Residence Inn which will require us to use a rollaway and probably the pullout couch. Would be nice if we could all be in single beds. I will look into Days Inn (but not in Newburgh) if this sounds like a good idea to those more knowledgeable than I. Matthias

I'm from Poughkeepsie originally. That Residence Inn is in a convenient location for immediate Route 9 access (straight shot north to Hyde Park and Rhinebeck), gas stations, chain restaurants, etc.

I agree with TFF. The Residence Inn Poughkeepsie is a very good location for visiting Hyde Park area. There is a brand new Hampton Inn set to open soon right in that area as well - I don't know exact date.

There is also a Residence Inn on Rt9 in Fishkill, about 10mi south of the one in POK. It's very close to I-84, and therefore affords quicker access to areas like West Point.

There are a couple of other hotels at Rt9/I84, including Siera Suites.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express West Point/Ft. Montgomery last year for our visits to West Point and Hyde Park. I don't know if it would meet your needs since our room had 2 Queen beds, but I do highly recommend this property.

Guess we'll stick with the Residence Inn Pough. at least we'll have 2 bathrooms - but it would be great if each room had 2 beds instead of just one. So although we are paying for a 2 room suite, we still need to get at least 1 rollaway. I did check all the names mentioned for us and didn't find any other that would be any better.
