Hudson River Valley
Would much appreciate recommendations for terrific places to stay in the area of Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, etc. We'll be at Bard College for some business in early October and I'd like to make a mini-vacation of the trip. Don't know the area at all. We don't enjoy B&B's (we like more privacy), but do love great inns and gorgeous, quiet surroundings. Thanks in advance.

The Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck will fill the bill. But, make reservations soon. The first half of October is busy time in that area because of the foliage.

I agree on Beekman - we loved it there

Thanks for your replies. Question: Are the rooms at Beekman Arms not "dowdy"? I know that many people love old, historic inns and hotels; that they especially enjoy antiques, period furniture, claw tubs, etc. Easy to understand the appeal of such things. We're not crazy about older places-- UNLESS they're truly splendid. I thought I remembered reading that Beekman is "dated," (not in the best sense), but I may be misremembering. Would appreciate feedback. What abt that newer part of the hotel? Also: a very major consideration for us is quiet (one of the reasons we usually don't like the older places-- those very handsome, but creaky floorboards). Can anyone recommend which rooms at Beekman would be most quiet and private? Thank you!!

Well, Beekman Arms is after all considered the oldest functioning inn in the U.S! We did stay there some years ago and loved the Colonial charm. Yes, I do recall a new section driving by recently (although we actually live in Missouri). Guess you'll just have to phone or check it yourself. We happen to like "old places." Maybe you'd better check out Days Inn which is perfectly fine.
We have a son in the area and took in a Bard function...also went to Mohonk BTW which is quite a place. ozarksbill [email protected] |
