Howard Johnson's/Savannah
 

We have recently booked a room at Howard Johnson's in Savannah. Does anyone know if it is a decent place to stay?

It's not at all great but has a great price and is walking distance to historical district. The immediate area is a tad creepy including 2 dumpy adjacent motels a block closer to historic district, which are the ultimate escape valves to the high prices and low vacancies of historic district. Anyone remember their names?

It is in a *TERRIBLE* location. I wouldn't walk around there for anything, and walking distance to the historic district is debatable--for some yes, others no. You are out of the historic district and in an area approaching slum status. There are *plenty* of reasonable places closer in...Days Inn, Hampton Inn, ANY of those before HoJO! Their old ads, don't know if this is still true, showed an antebellum home, as if this were their place. Pure, unadulterated false advertising. It's a motel, and IMHO, not even a decent one.

1) It is 4 blocks to the historical district which is certainly walkable. Maybe even easier to get to the "action" than those pretentious riverside hotels with uneven cobblestones, hills, and a busy street to cross.<BR><BR>2) With their online hotel coupon HoJo is only a third the price of days inn, hampton, etc and doesn't suffer their eternal sellouts on weekends, etc. This is a godsend to certain of us "peasants" which may have to pay 8 times the price for historic district during busy times.<BR><BR>3) It isn't in a slum, but is across the street handy to a tourbus HQ (grey line?) and near a lot of vacant land with a few isolated unattractive businesses that are well lit to prevent crime. It's near that startup gourmet restaurant with the cheap furniture that everyone was raving about (a few yrs ago anyway), and the maritime museum (at least walk in to their free garden).

Thank you very much for your imput on the HoJo in Savannah. I am still a little concerned but my husband agrees with jt. He says we'll try it out for a night and if we don't like it, we'll find another place to stay. Thanks again for your info!
