How would I get from Times Square to the Fifth Avenue Shopping District?

You could take the N, R, or W uptown (should be marked as Queens destination if I recall correctly). Get off at the 5th Avenue stop and you'll be adjacent to the southeastern corner of Cnetral park and very close to the shopping district, which runs down 5th Ave south from that point. The subways are very crowded from 7-9:30AM and from 4:30-6:30PM but it's not a long ride and should be tolerable even if standing. If the weather is decent it is a nice walk from Times Square and could be done in 25-40 minutes depending on your pace.

If you try to take a subway, you will find that by the time you walk to a station, walk down the stairs, follow the usually long corridors (especially at Times Square), take the subway, then repeat the process getting back out at Fifth Avenue, the above the street walk would probably have been much shorter.

Walk, walk, walk. If you happen to be at 42nd Street and Broadway there is a subway you could take - the #7 one stop to 5th Avenue. Why you would want to do this doesn't make much sense since it is a less than 10 minute walk - this distance is just about 1/4 of a mile. Entering the subway, getting to the #7 platform, waiting for a train will take at least 10 minutes, possibly more. A note suggests you don't do this walk during peak business periods - nonsense.

Unless you're a 5 pack a day smoker, listen to Howard and WALK from Times Square to 5th and make a left. When you get to Saks, look across the street and check out the tree. Stop in St. Patrick's Cathedral. If you're exhausted when you get to 59th Street take a subway back to Times Square. If you're not, walk back. Go down 6th, 7th or Broadway for a little variety.
And don't worry about seeing Darnell. There's nobody in NY named Darnell anyway.

Actually, we plan a trip to NYC where we would PREFER to walk everywhere, but wonder about certain areas. Husband and boys attending Knicks game on a Thursday evening, we are hoping to land a Times Square hotel. Will train into Penn Station and out of Grand Central, want to be centrally located, and walk as much as possible.

As pointed out when walking north/south it is 20 blccks to a mile. When going east/west, from avenue to avenue, is the same as walking three blocks north/south.
From 7th to 5th Avenue is two very long blocks. The walking distance is approximately six north/south blocks.
