How to Top Avenue Q?
 

I will be in NYC the weekend of July 9th and am looking for suggestions for fun plays/musicals/dance groups to see. I recently saw Avenue Q and am afraid that it has ruined me for all other productions (I have never laughed so hard in my LIFE). I would appreciate any ideas for a fun night out. Thanks!

Have you seen Wicked? I saw it earlier this month and loved it! The music and singing are fabulous and the story itself is really interesting. The cast is pretty fabulous too!

I saw Hairspray last year and loved it too, but I know there is a different cast now. However, I understand that it's still considered to be a great show. It is certainly a lot of fun, with great songs/music.

cheryl, that's a tough call, because there is no other show like Avenue Q. Despite many favorable comments on the forum about Wicked, there are strong dissenters as well. And, the two are so different and not knowing where your tastes run, it's hard to say if you'd enjoy Wicked.
The same could be said about Assassins. It's extremely different from Avenue Q (and certainly not a million laughs!). Yet, we thought both were outstanding productions. (Interestingly, both won Tonys this year. Another similarity: neither would be considered mainstream shows.}
I don't know how much help I've been. I guess what I'm saying, individual tastes differ!
Lee4's recommendation of Hairspray is certainly a good one as well. It's also an excellent show....and a lot more mainstream. (The new cast has gotten good reviews.)
Keep one thing in mind: You're not going to find anything like Avenue Q!

For a laugh, how about The Producers.

My vote would be an off Braodway , one woman show called, " Bridge and Tunnel"

The show was featured on a story on CBS Sunday Morning Program.

Sarah Jones is a performer who takes on the personna of about 10 characters. The theme of the show is about the immigrant experience in the NYC Metro area.

The show is funny, moving, sad, and uplifting - I HIGHLY recommend it!

I agree Bridge and Tunnel is outstanding. Sarah Jones is a real talent and I beleive we'll be seeing a lot of her in the future.
