How to spend 30 hours in Juneau

S.O.S. My husband and I are taking a cruise up Alaska's Inside Passage in late May and will disembark in Juneau. We will have thirty hours from Saturday morning til Sunday afternoon to see the sites before flying home. Where to stay, what to see, where to eat? Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated as we have to book accommodations soon!

I am also going to Alaska in a few weeks and Juneau is one of stops. I found this website helpful.

I would book accommodations soon because they are starting to fill up. I decided to stay in the Mendenhall Valley at the Best Western (there are 2). It has great AAA rates and senior rates and also is close to the airport and has complimentary transportation. The Adventure Bound boat trip was recommended, but I would call to book soon as they sell out fast due to the cruise ships. Also Captain Larry's whale watching should be good. Here is the website.

Enjoy your trip.

Help! Hasn't anyone ever been to Juneau?

Elainee May 3rd, 2003 04:47 AM

We stayed at one of the hotels at the water, nice to see the boats. The glacier is a good excursion. Do NOT take public transportation as recommended in some guide books. We did and waited forever for the return bus and finally found someone with a cell phone that worked to call a cab for us. Big mistake!! We also did a small plane flight over the glacier and the bay. Great!! The restaurants were ok, nothing great that I would recommend. More salmon for dinner.

We spent about 60 hours there two summers ago, and you could do what we did -- watch the rain. It never stopped for more than about 10 minutes during that time. We didn't take the tram up the mountain as there would not have been any visability. We did drive slightly to the north and enjoyed looking at the sights, including the glacier where we walked in the rain. Mainly we just enjoyed the small town atmosphere, even going to a couple of movies.

Thank you Deborah, Elainee, and Patrick! We'll stay at the Best Western, pack the Gortex, and won't rely on the public transportation system. Any restaurant suggestions anyone?

You can get a walking tour map when you arrive. It is easy to follow.

Hi Elaine:

I'll give you some of recommendations I found online on another message board. Since I haven't been to any of them, perhaps someone else that has tried these places can advise both of us!!

Fiddlehead (breakfast, lunch & dinner)
Di Sopra (finer dining)
The Hangar (downtown at the Wharf) (American & Seafood)
Twisted Fish (by tram downtown) (seafood)
Gold Room at Westmark Hotel (fine dining)
El Sombrero (Alaskan Mexican!!)
Seong's Sushi Bar
Inn at the Waterfront (fine dining)

Hope this helps.
