I ended up getting on a flight from SF at 3:45 pm sunday. They had offered to put me on the 12:30 pm flight in coach, but since I had a business class ticket, flying coach on a completely full flight (probably in the middle seat) didn't sound like a lot of fun. So, I waited the few extra hours for the business class seat. The flight home was uneventful, but didn't get back until late Sunday night (midnight or 1am), so it kind of killed the weekend. Oh well, could be worse.

Well, glad you got home safely, did you do anything interesting while waiting in SF?

Do not despair. You can get Sarabeth's on-line. I just shipped a crate of the jams to my Mom in Florida. If I had to leave nyc, I would say goodbye with a visit to:
-Strawberry Fields & one last look at the Dakota
-The Big Whale @ Museum of Nat. Hist.
-Afternoon feeding of the sea lions.
-Bubby's for brunch
-Just one more opera at the Met with a
longing look back at the Chagalls & the fountain.
-Katz's pastrami on rye
-Ess-a-bagel. sigh
-a stroll through Grand Central, especially the lower level with a stop at Junior's.
-John's Pizza on Bleeker
-a sing-a-long at Rose's Turn
-a few off-broadway shows
-one last shopping spree at Century 21
-and finally, I would take a zillion pictures. Since I live here, I don't walk around with a camera and therefore don't really have any pictures of me with the city in the background. How strange, but probably normal. And sad. Heck, I'm not leaving but I think I am going to do that anyway from now on.
Have a safe trip Scarlett.

Scarlett, what a tough one. I know how hard it would be to move from my city missing all the day to day stuff but the one NYC thing that can't be duplicated is the bagels! I don't care how NY they claim to be outside of NYC they aren't so stock up the freezer now! Have a safe trip. I love NYC and am itching for a trip there now.

Unfortunately, no. I was down in Pebble Beach, and was scheduled on the Saturday night redeye. The flight was still on, so I checked out of my hotel (the Inn at Spanish Bay) and started to head up to SF airport. Stopped along the way to see a movie (weather was horrible). After movie, called AA and flight had been canceled. So I just got a room at one of the airport hotels, had a nice brunch the next morning and left. If the flight had been canceled earlier, I would have just stayed in Pebble Beach, gotten a massage at the Spa, had a nice dinner, then leave the next day. But of course, the airlines always wait to cancel flights until they can cause the most inconvenience for their customers.

The problem is, you can never really cram the "essence" of NYC into a few days. I know, because I once, too, left the city for a year, only to return. What did I do before I left? I went to Central Park and sat by the boat pond listening to "that guitar man" for an afternoon and cried because there would be no more days like that. I cried so much that a kind man beside me asked me if I was okay and invited me to coffee.

What would I do now if I were leaving? I'd probably cry again! But I'd also walk around my neighborhood soaking in the sights. I'd visit a favorite neighborhood restaurant -- nothing special, just a "Tuesday night" kind of place that you won't visit again for a while. I might have a drink at Cipriani's in Grand Central and watch the people go by.

My advice: call up H&H and send yourself some bagels to arrive shortly after you get there. It will make you feel like home.

Scarlett==take some of this snow (although there's not much left in the city, outside the city still has some),make some snowballs, pack it in dry ice. Put it in your freezer when you get down south, then when you miss NY, take them out and reminisce about those snowstorms you don't have anymore.

Its cold, but could you do a picnic on the river bank so you can look across at the city and remember all the good things there.

Scarlett, best of luck to you in the south. We did the same thing six months ago. Bittersweet, but worth the move.
I sat in Grand Central one day during rush hour with absolutely nothing to do. After all those years of navigating commuters and trying to jam my way into the subway, it was the most amazing experience to watch it all without participating. I must have looked ridiculous, as I was smiling from ear to ear, with no place to sit, just soaking it all in.
Loved every minute of it, looking at all the faces go by.

Scarlett

How do you say goodbye to something you love so much? I'm not sure it can be done with a city like NYC.

If it were me I'd probably find myself a nice window table up at the Rainbow Room where I'd toast a farewell to my favorites with a promise to return.

Go luck in your new venture - I know you'll love it!!

Second Avenue Deli for tongue, kasha varniskas, and motzo ball soup.

A drink at the Rainbow Room bar in the late afternoon. Make that over priced champagne while the city turns on the lights.

Funky slippers from Pearl River.

The St. Regis.

Sit on the steps of St. Patricks or the Metropolitan Museum of Art and people watch.

Brooklyn Heights.

When I moved from a big city finally I went around for a day taking photographs of my favorite buildings, street corners, etc. that will always be special memories. It is amazing to me now how many were torn down or how it's changed, and I have a collection of memories to cherish. I had a few meals in my favorite restaurants and bought ball cap of my hometown basball team. I second the snowball idea and have done that. Come on down to the Sunshine State and welcome to a new chapter in your life ! I wish you a succesful and seamless move.

Gosh... what a dilemma. I would take a loooong stroll around the Met and sit by the Temple of Dendur for a while and take it all in. Next, I would drive over to New Jersey and take as many pictures as possible of the skyline. I'd walk around SoHo and up Madison Avenue -- have lunch at Felix and then a drink (or dinner) at La Goulue.

Oh my God, Scarlett! Have you changed your mind yet? Don't go!!! This reminds me of the farewell party where the leavee feels so loved he/she decides to stay.

Just remember, you can always come back. Nowhere is it written in stone that any decision is forever. It's a Scarlett's perogative to change her mind.

Big smooch!

I'd join the Coney Island Polar Bear Club for a New Year's dip, towel off, and immediately leave the city. Kinda like a symbolic baptism or cleansing of the soul.

A hot dog!! From a street vendor with a straw in the pop - can't get those anywhere else. Wish I had a NYC hot dog right now. I think some pepperoni pizza too from your favorite place.

I'm sorry you are leaving but I hope your new adventure is fabulous too.

Weep weep
You are all sooo kind.
I do take photos, walking Pup in the park, I often take the camera, he is the most photographed Pup in NYC these days ((&))
But I want to get some good building photos and small vignettes. There is a school nearby where the children (very small) leave around 5 with these tiny violins, and they are all so happy to be outside and full of energy and hoping around..and I imagine them inside playing violins, I want photos of them
We take Pup to Riverside park which is right by the water, I have some photos of the barges on the river with NJ in the background.
The bagel idea is very good! I can have them send me frozen bagels, we have a place in Rhode Island that sends us Portugese muffins, why not NY bagels??
syd, I am glad that you did that and that it made you smile..I am really happy to be moving and on to another adventure..it just struck me the other day that I won't be able to just run over to the Met when I need to see my Ballerina or the painting of the Horse Fair..poor Yankee, he will have to fly me back once a month..
Would anyone be interested in reports from Florida...sort of like postcards from the edge ?

Well I'm certainly interested in hearing how Scarlett, The Yankee, and Pup do in Florida (JAX area?).

You simply must send postcards from the edge.

More good things about moving to Florida:

More house for your money.

Cheap orange juice.

No state taxes.

Nice January weather.

Watersports.

Florida resident passes to Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, and Busch Gardens.

Pink Flamingos.

Cheap grapefruit.
