How to get to Mount Rushmore

Where is the best place to fly into to get to Mount Rushmore?

One person suggested that I fly into Minneapolis and drive there.

Msp. is a LONG way away. Fly into Rapid City,S.D. Less than an hour away.

Whoa - I live in Minneapolis and often have driven to the Black Hills. It is a grueling 10 hour drive. With not much in between. The flight will be more getting to Rapid City, but it would be worth it. I vote for Rapid City.

Take the overnight train from New York to Chicago, and then fly from Chicago to Rapid City. :D

I'm watching too much Hitchcock.

The closest major airport to Mt. Rushmore is Denver and it's still a 6-7 hour drive. One option is flying into Billings, Montana if Rapid is too expensive. Not sure how far Billings is--five hours, maybe?? Check mapquest for sure.

I don't think there's been an overnight train from New York to chicago since they first screened north by northwest - if you look at the Amtrak schedule it takes about 3 weeks by train fron NY to chicago - even without the usual delays.

You can get decent priced flights right into Rapid City. It's a beautiful little city. You'll want to rent a car. Getting around is easy. Be sure to plan a day to drive west to the Badlands and Wall Drug, too.

If funds allow it, definitely fly into Rapid City. It's only 30 miles or so from there to Rushmore. Use the time you save to see the Badlands as sdkch76 suggested. They're just east of Rushmore. Badlands NP is one of my favorite places in the US, with unique views around every bend.
