Bangor, Maine is much closer to Bar Harbor than is Portland.
Delta airlines has 3 flights a day from NY's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Bangor, and it is about 1 hr from there to Bar Harbor.
Since you mention intern, I am assuming that you will NOT be renting a car so you are want help with other means of transportation.
How to get from Bangor to Bar Harbor I do not know.

It looks pretty easy to get to Bangor including via Concord Trailways bus service which I use to get from Logan Airport to NH. I agree with J62 to contact the resort for help. It looks like Down East Transportation (bus) offers limited service from Bangor.

The least expensive way - assuming you are on a very tight budget - is probably to take a bus.
You would have to take public transit from the airport to Manhattan (you have to tell us which airport you will land at so we can provide details on how to get there).
You can take greyhound bus from Manhattan to Bangor Maine for an advance purchase fare of about $50 - but it will take about 12 hours to do so. Flying to Bangor will be much faster - but also much more expensive. (There are flights for as little as $150 but they require stops. Non-stop flights start at about $300. Also advance purchase will get the cheapest tickets.)

Fly to Bangor (BGR) , or take Amtrak train to Portland Maine....transferring in Portland to Concord Coach (bus) to Bangor. From Bangor take the shuttle to Bar Harbor:
