How to get from Whitehorse to Anchorage

We need to get from Whitehorse to Anchorage early June 09. The shuttle bus doesn't run on the day We want to travel (a Monday) & at present the only other way we can see to get there is by getting to Skagway, a flight to Juneau & then another flight to Anchorage. Has anyone got any other suggestions. We can leave Whitehorse on the Monday & don't have to be in Anchorage untill the Tuesday. We would have liked to go by road but it doesn't seem possible to hire a car for a one way trip.

Wow! You like a challenge, don't you? :) I took a quick look at kayak.com for June 8th and came up with a $391 fare from Whitehorse to Anchorage via Vancouver on Air Canada. It's certainly not the most direct route to go but at just over seven hours it may be your fastest.

I really liked the one that went from Whitehorse to Fairbanks via Calgary, Vancouver, Salt Lake City and then Seattle. Now that would really rack up the frequent flier miles!

Good luck on your journey!

You probably should have found out about and arranged this first before your other plans and routing?? I would suggest you continue with what you have, flying into Juneau then cont' to Anchorage. It isn't going to get any better.

I've flown with Air North to Dawson City, and they fly Whitehorse/Fairbanks, but not every day, then you would need Alaska Airline to Anchorage. There is a charter air option as well.

Look at Avis for a one way car rental.

It looks like you need to adjust your itinerary. The problem with Avis or any other car rental agencies in Whitehorse is that you would have to rent a car in Canada and return it in the US. Not possible. The easiest way is what BudgetQueen suggested. Fly with Air North to Dawson City where you make a stop and then continue to Fairbanks. In Fairbanks take a plane, train, automobile or bus to Anchorage.

What is your itinerary like?
How are you arriving in Whitehorse?
After Anchorage where are you going?
Are you returning to Whitehorse? Then you can rent a car and return it in Canada. Can you provide more information? There has to be a way to make your trip stress free.

Hi everyone, thanks for your input. I live in New Zealand but my son is working in Whitehorse, hence the visit. We are all doing a trip to the Rockies & then fly from Edmonton to Whitehorse where we are intending to spend the weekend May 30/31st before we have to say goodbye to him & head to Anchorage to pick up a cruise on June 5th back to Vancouver. We would have had time to get from Whitehorse to Anchorage at a slower pace but now as a huge surprise my brother & wife from UK have decided to join us on the cruise & arrive in Anchorage on Tues June 2nd, hence why I would like to get there on that date. So, keep those suggestions rolling in, there has to be a way!!!!

Not many more suggestions to roll in. One suggestion is for your son to take a couple days off and drive you to Anchorage or at least to Tok. The second is to hire a private transfer. http://www.alaskadirectbusline.com/

There is simply no easy way to get to Anchorage from Whittier on your specified day and with very limited time. BudgetQueen introduced the most logical approach. Fly from Whitehorse through Juneau.

Should be, there is no easy way to get to Anchorage from Whitehorse

and not from Whittier

yes would love to do the trip with my son but I don't think his poor old car is up to it. He hasn't been in Canada long and has only been able to buy a cheap 2nd hand car that just survived the journey from Vancouver to Whitehorse. I think Whitehose to Anchorage & back would be the death of it!

He can rent a car in Whitehorse, drive you to Anchorage, drive back to Whitehorse and return a car there.

Thanks everyone - think we have settled on the Whitehorse-Skagway-Juneau-Anchorage route, but it was great having a venue to what alternatives were out there!

Hi there,

We actually have the same problem going the opposite direction at the very same time. Do you think it is possible to share a rental car, one parts taking it from Whitehorse to Anchorage, another taking it back from Anchorage to Whitehorse? Whould that be a problem at the border? Or the rental car company?

jxt, would you be interested in such an arrangement?

Cheers,
Thomas

NewPlaces Feb 16th, 2009 09:33 AM

I think you already know the answer.

Sorry, not possible. There is no rental car agency in Anchorage or Whitehorse that would agree to such arrangements. The primary driver and a second driver need to be both present at a rental office. And definitely a problem at the border crossing in Beaver Creek. Your trip may be delayed a few hours or few days. Maybe longer. OP got many simpler and legal suggestions. Use one of them.

Alaska Direct Bus Line goes from Anchorage to Whitehorse three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. It departs from Anchorage 6 am arrives in Tok 1:30 pm ($105.00). From Tok you take another bus at 3 pm arriving in Whitehorse at 1 am ($135.00)

I have an alternative for you - I will be doing the reverse in June. Take the Skagway bus from Whitehorse to Skagway (3 hour trip $60 twice a day) then rent a car in Skagway and drive to Anchorage. You have to drive back through Whitehorse but this way you are renting and returning in the U.S. Most car rentals are OK with this but there may be a small fee. It is a long drive! Good luck!

>>....then rent a car in Skagway and drive to Anchorage. <<

You think there's a road between Skagway and Anchorage???

explorenorth Apr 7th, 2009 05:40 AM

LOL, I see, you're going back though Whitehorse. Avis in Skagway MAY do a one-way but I wouldn't bet on it except very late in the season when they want to get cars back to Anchorage anyway.
