How to get from New York To Bar Harbor
My husband and I are planning to visit New York in September (we are from New Zealand) and wish to travel from New York to Bar Harbour and hoping to go by train.I'm not sure if that is possible, so any suggestions would be most appreciated My Great Grandfather was a sea captain and was born in Bar Harbor so very keen to see the area and have some New England crayfish !!

Train only goes as far as Portland Maine, then you'd have to hire a car. Or, you could train as far as Boston, then there is bus service via ConcordTrailways.com
U.S Airways flies from LaGuardia to Bar Harbor I believe. |
Can't help you with the train. But, just so you don't have any trouble ordering in a restaurant...in New England it's called lobster. Crayfish (or crawfish), which are much smaller, are found in Louisianna. How nice to be able to visit the place of your grandfather's birth. Hope you have a great trip!

Don't know about train connections, but the closest "real" airport is Bangor, about a 90 min drive from Bar Harbor if I remember correctly. Public transportion onward to Bar Harbor doesn't appear to be very good, but you definitely want to rent a car to explore the Bar Harbor & Acadia NP area.
If you have an early flight back, there's a decent hotel (used to be a Hilton, now branded Four Points by Sheraton) directly attached to the airport. Flew in years ago on Continental from Newark and it appears that USAirways also flies the route from Laguardia according to the airport's web site, so you have 2 options. http://www.flybangor.com Booking these short-haul flights on their own is often expensive, but depending on what airline you're flying from NZ to the US, you could be eligible for a so-called "Airpass" fare or you might even be able to tack on these flights to your long-haul ticket for a reasonable surcharge - especially if you only stop over in NY in one direction and just change planes in the other. This is the kind of itinerary where a good travel agent would come in very handy. BTW, Maine is proud of its LOBSTER, not crayfish! I think confusing the two could land you in prison there or worse :-) Hope this helps, Andre |
USAirways have a commuter plane (Beech propeller type) that flies from Boston to Bar Harbor (airport code: BHB).
If you take the train from NY to Portland, you'll need to transfer from Boston South Station to Boston North Station to continue the journey. |
