How to get from Anchorage to Whittier?
My family is taking a Princess cruise this July. We fly into Anchorage and are renting an RV to explore for about 10 days before the cruise. We pick up and drop off the RV in Anchorage, and then need to make our way down to Whittier for an evening departure. There are 4 of us and while I haven't checked with Princess yet for their exact prices, it seems like it will be about $200-250 for the transfer either via bus or train. I'm leaning towards renting a minivan from Avis for about the same amount and making the drive in the morning and then doing some kayaking in the afternoon. Does this seem reasonable? Also, any recommendations on outfitters? Thanks.

I believe the owners name is June. My family had a great time kayaking in the PMS, amongst the precious sea otters. I can't remember how long it took us to get from Anchorage to Whittier, but not that long....Just check the tunnel times so that you don't have to sit and wait at the Whittier tunnel. Budget Queen will definitely come to your rescue on your timeframe. I can't imagine the train costing that much??? Enjoy your trip! |
Avis has a dockside rental turn in Whittier. By all means book the vehicle asap, esp if you need a minivan. To my knowledge, Avis is the only option for Whittier dropoff. We picked up a vehicle in Anchorage, toured a few days on our own then dropped it off in Whittier next to the ship.

For clairfication the Avis in Whittier, office is at the Harbor Store. Your pricing is within the ball park for 4 people. There is only Avis and Harley's that allow Anchorage/Whittier rentals. Compare Harley's for costs. http://www.harleysrentalaska.com/

Do check with Princess. The transfer from Anchorage to Whittier was included in our cruise price last year--we cancelled, but it was originally included.
