The Salisbury has unfortunately not been renovated but it's still a decent if tired looking place to stay. There aren't many other hotels closer to Lincoln Center but if you want to check around, the Empire, 6 Columbus, On the Avenue, the Milburn and the Beacon are in that general area. Out of those, I'd say the Milburn is a bit closer and imo a bit nicer than the Salisbury. The Beacon is much nicer but probably booked or over budget.

Mclaurie, I am disappointed by your views about the Salisbury. No reservations at the Beacon, but the Milburn is available and less expensive than the Salisbury. I am thinking now that the location of the Salisbury is more convenient because of time restraints as we are also attending family functions. We can quickly get to shows from the Salisbury. I also remember that the rooms were a good size at the Salisbury. Can you recommend something else in the same area that you would think is better

i've had good luck in the past using quikbook.com especially booking during one of their sales. i usually go to nyc in october for business, always an expensive time of year, and using them almost always saves money over booking with the hotels directly. last october i got on the ave for well under $200/night through quikbook. and most of the time they don't charge your card in advance either which is nice.

We stayed at the Salisbury with our 20 something daughters about a year ago and got an unbelievable rate of about $130 per night during Christmas week through hotels.com. We were very satisfied with the rate and location. We usually stay closer to Times Square area but this is actually right by Central Park and was about 7 blocks (very short walk) to Times Square and the theater district.

We have also stayed at the Edison Hotel several times and have always been happy. Very art deco, small but clean rooms, very reasonable restaurant in the lobby for breakfast. Right in the theater district.

We thought the room was very nice at the Salisbury. They had the rate advertised on their website and it was also low on hotels.com. It was during Christmas week so not sure if they had deals because they weren't full plus the economy was down. We also thought the location was great. If you got a good deal I would stick with that.

getting closer doesnt always mean better deals--if they fill up, the price tends to rise.I always stay at the Marriott Courtyard at 53rd and 3rd.The rooms are large, and very comfy beds and clean.Great views of Chrysler building.Theres no big fancy lobby,so it keeps their costs down and ive found them very competitive and convenient to all subways, East/West and Nort/South.We just stayed there over July 4th at 200/nt.Im sure youve found weeken rates are cheaper as well--good luck
