How to get around baltimore for touring?????
 

We will be in baltimore in oct and we dont know how to get around. It will be very costly to take cabs everywhere are there busses subways etc? here is where will be visiting
Inner Harbor,
Fort Mc-Henry
B&O railway museum
Uss Constellation
and the Babe Ruth birthplace/museum

How can we get in between these things. We have a shuttle from the hotel to the inner harbor area. Not in that particular order either.

I think there is a water taxi to Ft. McHenry from the Inner Harbor. I think the USS Constellation is in the Harbor. Have you looked at the website for any of these things? Do you have a guidebook?

I believe there is an underground rail system in Baltimore but I don't know anything about it. It might be called Metro, same as DC's sytem

The National Aquarium is also in the Inner Harbor area. There is also a submarine docked next to the Aquarium.
Camden Yards is also within walking distance of the Inner Harbor. The water taxi is good to get to Fort McHenry.

The water taxi stop at the fort is seasonal and will be closed when we go on the 10

I am not sure where any of these specific attractions are located in Baltimore. Baltimore does have a Metro system but it looks like it is very limited. I tried to figure it out when I was there 2 years ago but could not. I walked every where from Mount Vernon to the Inner Harbor and over to Fell's Point. I only took a cab once when it was raining. I suggest that you get a map to figure out your plan of attack. One other site that I found interesting was the American Visionary Museum at the foot of Federal Hill.

Another thought. Depending on how far apart these places are and how long you are going to be there, it may be cost effective to rent a car. Cab rides do add up fast.

We have 1.5 days before a cruise to rent a car would cost $196 plus parking so thats out of the question...not sure what to do

Public Transportation

Maryland Transit Administration (MTA, 866-RIDE-MTA) Bus #1 stops at the park main gate. From there it is a 100 yard walk to the Visitor Center and Star Fort.

For Fort Mc-Henry, googling got me to the following:

It suggests a #1 bus. I am not personally familiar with the metro or bus as we always drive over. If you know where you are staying, do check with them-they'll give you good info.

If the circulator is still running, that would be even nicer than metro as you could see thing. My dear hub and I have fun on the Baltimore Duck but I'm not certain it's there anymore.

Check out the suggested web site for the Charm City circulator. It is a free bus that has two lines running: east/west and north/south. I think you will find it a big help.

Have fun in Baltimore; if you are flying into BWI airport be sure to stop at the information desk for free maps of Baltimore. They are a big help.

The charmcity circulator should work for you. The lightrail is good for getting to/from the airport and points north. Many of the things you want to see are fairly close to each other, so even if you do have to get a taxi for one or two short trips, it won't be that much. Do you want any recs for restaurants? If you are into art, the painting gallery at the Walters is wonderful and not far from downtown. The BMA is also good, but further out. If you are interested in historic homes, Evergreen is really interesting, as much for the people and collections as for the house.

To add to what Sassafrass mentions (and I second Evergreen), the Visionary Art Museum is very quirky and there is a restaurant in the same building.
