How should I bring money?
 

First time Hawaii traveler and I wanted to know should I bring travelers checks, wait and just use ATM's there (Waikiki)? How much cash should I bring along? Should I bring a combination? Thanks

I'd use ATMs. Don't carry a lot of cash at any one time. Traveler's checks are not necessary. Use credit cards for the big items and hit ATMs when you need cash. There are ATMs in airports, so you can easily get money to start out your trip when you get there.

Forget traveler's checks, just bring credit cards and your ATM. The amount of cash you need depends on your own group, itinerary, etc.

You might want to advise your ATM bank and your cc's that you'll be using them in Hawaii, so they don't suspect fraud and freeze your accounts.

When you use your ATM card in Hawaii, you will probably incur a small fee, but I think the dollar or two per transaction would outweigh the inconvenience of messing with and trying to cash travelers checks.

Just use your credit card as much as possible for meals, rental car, lodging, and large purchases.

If you're coming from another part of the USA, you'll find there are ATMs and merchants accept credit cards just like at home. We are just another state.

If coming from outside the US, you might want to bring some US$ travellers checks, but again, there are ATMS everywhere...in the malls, in convenience stores, probably in your hotel lobby.

Bring some in T-checks in case of an emergency such as a blackout or computer virus that can put ATM's out of commission for days.
