How safe is the metro around 11:00pm?
I'm traveling with my kids to DC for the 4th of July week. We would like to do the night tour. I'm a single mother and would like to know if the train are safe after 10:00PM. The tourmobile and the trolley do not drop off at the hotels. The metro ride will be from Union Station to Arlington on a weekday. We have done the subway in NYC after 10Pm and we felt safe and comfortable. We are looking forward to our first visit to the beautiful DC area.
Thanks |
There will be plenty of other folks (locals and other tourists) traveling along with you. Just take the usual precautions...
|
The Metro will be fine after 10PM tho there may be some homeless people lurking about near the metro entrance at Union Station.
|
I don't think I've seen more security anywhere than on the Metro system. While I often see panhandlers near Union Station, they've never been aggressive. If it's Rosslyn station you're going to in Arlington, that's a safe area too.

There will be so many other tourists around that week, it will feel like it's 11 AM!
|
If you felt safe in NYC, you will definitely feel fine on Metro.
|
you can always bring a dirty diaper to make it smell more like the NYC subway at night :)

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Repete, you are very funny:-) I will for sure buy the tickets to the night tour. WOW....I'm so excited!!!!

I wouldn't worry about it. I took the red line after 10 pm one evening on a weeknight, and the scariest part was walking to the metro entrance (and it wasn't really all that scary). Also, given that the 4th of July is usually a very crowded time in the District, you'll have lots of company.
Enjoy Washington, it's a neat place!!! |
The Washington Metro is safe. My only word of caution is that at some of the large parking lots (ie. New Carrollton) I would not prefer to park too far away from the train station.
