How much would it cost to have dental implants done in India?

I will be in India in late spring. I will be there for 3 months. I am thinking of having dental implants done. Please let me know.

Hi Cedric,

I can't help you with how much it will cost to get dental implants in India (I can imagine it is a lot cheaper than the states or the UK) but I would recommend that you strongly consider getting the treatment closer to home.

Having dental implants can take a lot longer than 3 months (around 6-8 months).

Because in one appointment your mouth will be prepared with the base of the implants placed into the correct position - You will then be given a temporary prosthesis to be worn (false teeth) during the healing period. The healing period can take up to 3 months before you have to go back to the practice and then get your permanent teeth fixed to the implants.

Which could mean that the 3 months in India is not long enough for you to complete treatment and the level of hygiene standards and care will not be as high as it is in more developed countries. The other problem you will face is if you have any complications after having the implants and you need to go back to them - You could be looking at having a higher expense due to flights back and forth between India or if you go to a local dentist to sort out you will have to pay out on top of what you have already paid.

There are quite a few horror stories of people going abroad for implants - I would say it is not worth the risk (especially for such a big treatment)

I hope this helps.

Kieran

Welcome to Fodors. If you are serious about this - then you'll want to re-post over on the Asia forum tagged for India (see the 'change forum' pull down menu).

There have been several threads about medical tourism.

Implants can be very complicated - based on patient age, general health, condition of the mouth, etc. And even in the US dentists have very different track record of success. And it is a lengthy process if done properly.

If you are looking for lower prices you might want to consider a local dental school - with professors supervising the work. That way you don't have to make repeated trips out of he county - and have immediate recourse for any necessary adjustment or problem.

IMHO -

I would no more have a dental implant done by anyone but a highly recommended known quantity than I would with plastic surgery.

This is not saying that dentists in other parts of the world aren't qualified - many are - but you need to be sure of who you're seeing - and their credentials and exprience.

Having an emergency filling or even crown is one thing - an implant is quite another.

Hi Cedric,
I think i can help you, i am from India. I will try to collect details about your needs, i need some time to do that,
when are you planning to come over India?

Dukey1 Mar 14th, 2013 01:34 AM

I recently had an implant here in the US. The entire process took 9 months.

dfrostnh Mar 14th, 2013 03:25 AM

Add me to the list of people that needed more than 3 months and I know someone who had complications that needed even longer than 9 months. I would never ever go to anyplace that promised speedy service. It takes time for the jaw to grow around the implant material. In the meantime, I had to use a fake tooth.

nytraveler Mar 14th, 2013 09:03 AM

I would not go to any dentist without knowing the success rate of his implants. It should be at least 97 or 98%. If it's lower either s/he is not expert - or they are trying too many implants that have little chance for success.

The OP is a first time/only time poster. Probably long gone from Fodors.

Go price implants in the US. If you need a whole arch (top/bottom), try 25-40000$. YES 25000 to 40000$. In india, the exact same brand of implant, the exact same brand of crown, for 1/10th-1/8th the cost. THe dentists in India, SPECIALIST--periodontist, oral surgeons, prosthodontist are trained just as well as US dentists, and have done 10x the # of implants dentists here have done. Why? When they charge 400$ vs 2000$, people can afford them. Indian dentists are excellent. LIke any dentist, choose carefully, talk to them, get a specialist.

If you can afford 25 PLUS THOUSAND, go for it. I can get all my implants and a new bmw for the price of implants in the US. I have no hesitation going. Implants are very simple. THe restoration is the trick. SO you get a prosthodontist in India, and you will get excellent results. Dont try to rush. YOu most likely need to make 2 trips 6 months apart, and it will be just as good or better than here. US dentists are not the only game in town. They are not educated better, its all the same. 3 to 4 years, plus residency (specialist) training.

mtsaz100 Sep 13th, 2013 06:56 PM

I went. I love my implants. I know many others who got excllent implants in INdia. If you have questions, ask, I will be happy to tell you all about it via email or phone. Anywone who says otherwise, either hasn't gone, had a bad result, (it can happen here too), is a dentist here, or doesn't know what they are talking about. People in INdia are not stupid. THey are not going to tolerate a dentist who doesnt sterilize, and the dentists attracting US/UK/AUS patients, are not going to have subpar facilities, because it would be plastered all over the internet DO NOT GO TO X. I can give you names of dentists, I can show pics. I highly recommend it. (unless you have 25plus thousand to spend) then you dont need India.

Amazing, my dental implants took 18 months, how did they do it in such a short amount of time?

schmerl Sep 14th, 2013 04:04 AM

Pretty interesting that mtsaz100 was also touting getting dental implants in Costa Rica. Must have something against US dentists.
My dental implant took almost a year to complete. Don't know how it could be done while traveling for only a couple months.

nytraveler Sep 14th, 2013 10:15 AM

To be clear - most dentists in ANY country are not experts at doing implants - and they should not be done by anyone other than an expert.
.
One never knows how long the process will take - but 9 months to a year is not uncommon. A dentist saying they can do it in 3 months - is NOT qualified to do it properly. go to an expert.

This is a complicated procedure - and with some patients can be especially challenging. Again - you should only go to an expert with a proven track record - who will be around as long as you need them.

Going to any random dentist is like going to any random MD to treat your cancer. Who does that? For something serious and complicated - you always go to the best expert you can find!

True, it's hard to know, I wouldn't just go to someone I found on the internet in India. My dentist, whom I trust, recommended the specialist he works with and I really liked them a lot. They have specialized training in oral surgery and residency in that.

I don't recall my time frame, but I think it probably was about 9 months. It might have been a bit shorter, I just know it was at least 6 months, you need to wait a certain time in-between the steps and you can't rush that.

I don't know what mstaz is talking about but he clearly is promoting India for dental work. It could be fine, sure, but they don't cost $25,000 in the US, that's for sure. I am not clear on what that price is for, it sounds like for half your mouth? Yeah, that could be (about $2,000 per tooth), most people shouldn't need very many if they get routine dental care their whole life. I've never known anyone who doesn't have any teeth and would then have their entire mouth be implants, except I've seen those ads for that where they promise to do your whole mouth at once and with no waiting in-between. I don't know how that can work as I don't know any reputable oral surgeon who does it that way.

I can speak to this because I am in the process of getting 1 implant right now. I can say that with dental insurance, I am paying about $2,250 out of pocket. The cheapest place I found uses 3D imaging and the Surgical Guide ($1,050 not covered by insurance) and Membrane at Placement ($510 not covered by insurance) are two pricey pieces. The implant itself for this place is $999(my insurance covered 70% so I payed 299.70). Another dentist quoted me $2,175 for just the implant. I can only assume all the other charges would still apply.

When you get an implant, you have to consider the other costs associated with it that insurance may or may not cover. This includes bone grafting (Insurance paid $140, I paid $60) the abutment (Insurance paid $262, I paid$113) and the Implant crown (Insurance covered $451.50, I paid $193.50)

I have decent insurance that covers impants and some other surgical proceedures for 70%. My total out of pocket was $1,000 more than insurance covered. Implants are not cheap, even for just 1. Mine was number 18, all the way in the back, on the bottom left of my mouth. If I end up needing more implants in the future.....I would probably look into going overseas. By the time you pay airfare and everything, you at least get a cool vacation out of it and likely end up paying less. Probably best for more than one tooth tho.

Maybe Fodors should start a forum for medical tourism...

I think India is the one of the cheapest country as compare with the European or the American countries for dental implants, because here is a huge source of dentist. As per my knowledge, dental implant would be cost around Inr. 15000 to 20000 {£ 195}. And if you get operated in Uk then it would be cost around £1200.
